Subject: Letter of Support for Measure J Community Initiated Project - Solar Shade Structure
and Rainbow Bike Racks
Dear Measure J Commission,
The Palm Springs Sustainability Commission supports The LGBTQ Community Center of the
Desert ("The Center") application for Measure J funding for the proposed Solar Shade Structure
and Rainbow Bike Racks project.
Jonathan Lorenzo Yorba, Senior Manager of the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert,
presented their proposed project to the Sustainability Commission at the October 2024
Sustainabihty Commission meeting, where he discussed the proposed project and the positive
impacts it would have on visitors and passersby of the center. The specific built elements of their
project that would align with sustainability goals as described in the City of Palm Springs
Sustainability Plan and expressed by the community are as follows:
• Increasing shade and reducing urban heat island effects
• Encouraging other forms of transportation
• Promoting active transportation
• Improving the biking infrastructure within the City
• Increasing solar/renewable energy generation within the city
The community access to these features help support these goals. The specific elements of the
project were presented as follows:
• A solar shade canopy that will cover parking spaces
• A rideshare seating area and walkway
• Nine bike racks for safe bike storage
As we strive and continue to meet the City of Pahn Springs Sustainability Goals, we encourage
your consideration for The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert's ("The Center's") Solar
Shade Structure and Rainbow Bike Racks Project Measure J grant application.
Sincerely,
Roy Clark, Commission Chair
