The Bayanihan Desert Mural celebrates the contributions of Filipino Americans to
Palm Springs. Fil-Ams have played a vital role in the area’s development,
especially the Manong generation, who settled in Demuth Park in the early 20th
century. We’ve worked with area organizations to ensure the mural reflects the
local community, and Palm Springs artist James Adam Labuen Garcia designed it
with their input. The final design will be printed on ceramic tiles which are resistant to
weather, UV exposure and graffiti, ensuring it remains vibrant for decades. Tile has
significantly lower maintenance costs compared to painted murals. The mural will be
the first to represent the Fil- Am community. Its creation aligns with Measure J’s goal
of improving public facilities and supports the city’s goals of promoting social
equity. By sharing the Filipino community’s legacy in the city’s largest park the mural
addresses inequity in our cultural landscape and ensures a welcoming place for all.

A Measure J Community Driven Project
Proposal by Bayanihan Desert
Filipino American Contributions to
Palm Springs
The proposed Filipino American mural at Demuth Community Center,
spearheaded by Bayanihan Desert, stands as a visual and cultural testament to
the rich contributions of Filipino Americans in the Palm Springs region. This mural
aims to celebrate not only the history and legacy of the Filipino community but
also their profound influence on the social, cultural, and economic development
of Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley, and California at large.
In Fall 2021, the Palm Springs City Council formally acknowledged this history by
proclaiming October as Filipino American Heritage Month and designating
October 25 as Larry Itliong Day. Itliong, a prominent labor leader and activist, is a
key figure in Filipino American history. This proclamation was a significant step
toward giving the Filipino community the recognition it deserves, but the mural
proposes to take this celebration a step further. The project’s essence lies in the
power of visual representation—allowing underrepresented communities to "take
up space" and have their stories told in ways that are both accessible and
inspiring to all.
Celebrating + Preserving Filipinx
History
The mural, envisioned as the first of its kind in the desert, will capture invisible
histories—stories that are often overshadowed in the broader narrative of
American history. Filipino Americans, particularly the early Manong generation
who worked as farm laborers, chefs, and hospitality professionals, played an
instrumental role in shaping the multicultural fabric of the Palm Springs region.
These contributions remain largely underappreciated, despite the fact that many
of these early Filipino settlers established their homes in Palm Springs in the
early 20th century, particularly in the Demuth Park neighborhood.
This historical backdrop makes Demuth Park the ideal location for the mural.
Once known as the Veterans Tract neighborhood, Demuth Park was home to an
enclave of Filipino Americans, including military veterans and their families, who
contributed to the area’s growth, particularly in the years following World War II.
As a symbolic and literal space, the neighborhood continues to house
multigenerational and multicultural communities, making it a prime location to
honor family reunification, our neighborly “bayanihan” spirit, and an enduring
legacy.
Proposed Location
Community Engagement
Bayanihan Desert, a collective that actively supports the Filipino American
community, has demonstrated deep interest in creating a visual narrative that
represents this heritage. With the support of other Filipino American
organizations and community outreach initiatives, the collective has ensured that
the mural will reflect the desires and input of the people it aims to represent. The
community’s involvement in the conceptualization process has resulted in a
mural draft that reflects the shared aspirations and historical pride of the Filipino
American population.
Artistic Vision
Palm Springs native and artist James Adam Labuen Garcia, also known as
gaNyan has led the creation of the mural’s concept. His artistic style, which
intertwines cultural, spiritual, and socio-political themes, has garnered him
respect in both the U.S. and the Philippines. The original draft rendering will be
revised to incorporate feedback from the Public Arts Commission, along with
adjustments for the new location, which was unanimously approved by the Parks
and Recreation Commission in April 2023.
The final design of the mural will be digitally printed onto ceramic tiles, a method
chosen for its cost-effectiveness and longevity. While traditional painted murals
often require ongoing maintenance and upkeep—costs that can outweigh the
initial creation—the ceramic tile medium offers durability and ease of care.
Resistant to weather, UV exposure, and general wear and tear, these tiles are
expected to maintain their vibrancy for decades. Their minimal maintenance and
protective coatings against graffiti or staining ensure that the mural remains an
enduring symbol of Filipino American heritage.
Rendering of Mural by James Adam Labuen Garcia
Impact on the Community and
Beyond
This mural stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility and
representation, not just in arts and culture, but in leadership, education, and
politics. For future generations of Filipino Americans growing up in Palm Springs,
the mural will be a source of pride and inspiration. It will serve as a visual
reminder that their heritage is not only acknowledged but celebrated as an
integral part of the local and regional history.
Moreover, the project’s alignment with Measure J—which focuses on enhancing
parks and public spaces—reinforces the mural’s role in beautifying and
revitalizing Palm Springs. The proposed site at Demuth Community Center fits
within the city’s broader goals of making public spaces more inclusive and
representative of the diverse communities that call Palm Springs home.
Impact, continued.
Beyond beautification, the mural has the potential to transform the community by
fostering social cohesion and encouraging cultural exchange. By highlighting the
stories and contributions of Filipino Americans, the mural can serve as a catalyst
for dialogue between different cultural groups in Palm Springs. It invites both
residents and visitors to learn about the history of the Filipino community, thereby
fostering understanding and empathy. In this way, the mural can act as a bridge,
connecting different communities and encouraging a greater sense of belonging
for all.
Additionally, the project aligns with the City of Palm Springs' Strategic Plan,
which emphasizes the importance of social equity. By creating a public art piece
that represents an underrepresented group, the mural furthers the city’s goals of
promoting inclusion and diversity. It enhances the visibility of the Filipino
American community, ensuring that their stories are not only told but celebrated
in a prominent, public space.

KILN FIRED CERAMIC TILES
VS
DYE SUBLIMATION TILES
The photographic image transfer onto a glazed substrate (ceramic tile or porcelain) is done by
means of a laser printed decal using inorganic ceramic pigments as the printing substance.
Each printed image is then covered with a flux that helps form the image as a glassy, vitreous
layer of glaze during firing.
The printed image (decal) is then applied to a glazed ceramic or porcelain tile by means of a
water-slide process. After the decal is applied it is transferred to a drying room to eliminate
any moisture from the decal/substrate.
The dried image and tile is then placed in a high temperature kiln and is fired using a
controlled temperature profile with a maximum temperature of 1,650 °F. The firing cycle is
normally between 5 and 7 hours. During the firing process, the flux and ceramic pigments fuse
together with the glaze on the tile. The image has now become part of the tile and is as
durable as any glazed tile.
KILN FIRED TILES – HIGH TEMPERATURE (1,650 °F) PROCESS
RATINGS OF KILN FIRED TILES
Kiln fired mural tiles are rated for interior or exterior applications and are guaranteed to be:
● UV ray resistant - (will never fade)
● Chemical resistant - (can be used in pools)
● Graffiti resistant - (paint can be washed away)
● Scratch resistant - (can drive a battle tank over it)
● Weather resistant - (unaffected by water, frost, and sub zero temperatures)
RATINGS OF DYE SUB TILES
Dye sublimation mural tiles are rated for light duty interior use not exposed to direct sunlight.
They:
● Will scratch
● Will not resist direct UV rays (will fade under sunlight)
● Will not resist chemicals (should not be used in pools)
● Will not resist graffiti (can’t remove graffiti without destroying the image)
COLOR
REPRODUCTION
Tile Artisans uses proprietary ceramic pig ment technology combined with a unique
glaze chemistry and a finely tuned kiln firing temperature profile to provide the best
kiln-fired tile color matching in the industry.
Ceramic pigments, especially in the red, yellow, orange and pink colors, often have a
tendency to change shade when fired at very high temperatures. This makes
obtaining color-correct kiln-fired tile murals exceedingly difficult to fabricate. With
our newly developed ceramic color pigments, we are able to accurately reproduce
most colors, even when fired to 1,650°F and higher.
Tile Artisans was able to satisfy our color reproduction require ments with spectacular
results.

MURAL SECTIONING
To make larger tile murals more manageable, we divide larger murals into multiple sections. If your
mural has multiple sections, a section guide is included in this document.
TILE PLACEMENT
To aid installation, we provide a tile installation map for each section of the mural; see example
below. Each tile of the mural is supplied with one label in the upper left corner showing the tile’s
row and column number. If the mural is divided into sections, a label in the upper right corner
shows the mural section to which the tile belongs; see inset example below.
M U R A L
I N S T A L L A T I O N
I N S T R U C T I O N S
Tile murals may be installed from any starting point; however, care should be taken to
ensure that architectural features line up with the mural as intended. For example, if a
mural is being installed on a wall with a single 90° outside corner, installation should
start at that corner and proceed outward
MURAL LAYOUT
We recommend the Laticrete line of mortars and grouts. You may find the appropriate
mortar and grout for your particular application by visiting the Laticrete web site,
www.laticrete.com.
As with any tiled surface, the underlayment must be waterproof, strong, and clean to
ensure proper bonding and long life. Diagrams showing proper installation materials
for a variety of applications are attached to this document.
Mural tiles should be installed using the grout joint width specified on the installation
map (upper left corner, see example on the previous page). Use of plastic spacers of
the appropriate size is recommended as an installation aid; however, allowance must
be made for the fact that porcelain tiles generally vary slightly in size.
A silicone-based grout sealant should be applied to the grout joints after the grout is
cured; this allows dirt and graffiti to be more easily removed from the grout joints.
Mural tile labels may be removed by carefully and slowly peeling the label
from the tile. Peeling too fast will leave paper and adhesive residue on the tile.
Should that happen, lacquer thinner is an excellent solvent for removal of label
residue. A rag or plastic-bristled (not metal) brush may be employed. The tiles
should then be cleaned with an ammonia-based cleanser such as Windex to
remove the remaining haze of lacquer thinner residue.
LABEL REMOVAL
We advise you to provide the mural owner or the agency or department responsible
for mainte nance with a copy of this installation document, including all installtion
maps, for safe keeping indefinitely. Should a mural tile ever require replacement, e.g.,
due to vandalism, one may refer to the installation map to determine the row and
column number(s) of the affected tile(s). We archive all artwork indefinitely.
