3. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW ITEMS:
3.3144 – A Restudy item: Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility for review and
approval of color for the metal roof shade structure at 4575 E. Mesquite Avenue. Marcus
Fuller made the staff presentation; he reminded the Committee of the previous review in
which some suggestions were made on how to improve proposed color by the design
team. The Committee unanimously agreed that the applicant has made all the required
changes and therefore recommended approval of the project. Motion to approve was
made by Doug Hudson and seconded by Lance O’Donnell. Vote was 6-0
SP 08-006 – Implementation of a new sign program for the future Gene Autry Plaza
located at the southeast corner of Gene Autry Trail and Ramon Road. David Newell made
the staff presentation. The Committee members were concerned with the proposed
monument signs and the overall size of the proposed wall signs on the two anchor stores.
The Committee also wanted to know more about the addition of the Lowes signage on the
monument sign raising questions about future maintenance and access issues. After a
lengthy discussion involving the size of the wall signs, the location of public art at the site
and the overall concept of the sign program, the committee recommended that the item
be restudied by a vote of 5-0-1 (Chair Jim Cioffi abstained).
5.1160-PD 341 – Final development plans of a previously approved 4-story , 126-room
Marriott Residence Inn to be located along East Tahquitz Canyon Way and west of
Hermosa Drive. The Marriott Residence Inn is part of a mixed-use development by Nexus
that will consist of two hotels and retail commercial uses to be built in phases. Edward O.
Robertson made the staff presentation.
Two members of the Committee, Chair Jim Cioffi and Lance O’Donnell disclosed that the
applicant met with them for some suggestions and inputs on what the City would like to
see on the architectural design. The Committee concurred that the architecture is great
and that details were wonderful. The committee encouraged the architect to simply some
parts of the overall design and to incorporate additional solar control components to the
design. The applicant and the architect agreed with all the comments and also agreed to
continue the AAC review process to the next meeting. The continuation will allow the
architect time to modify the design and incorporate the positive comments from the AAC.
The Committee unanimously voted to continue the item to the next meeting.
