HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-12-08- ARC MinutesCITY OF PALM SPRINGS ARCHITECTURAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE December 8, 2008 Council Chambers, City Hall 3200 East Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92262 ROLL CALL: Present: Christopher Sahlin Absent: None Lance O’Donnell Douglas Hudson Michael King Paul Ortega Planning Commissioner: Leo Cohen CALL TO ORDER: Chair Chris Sahlin called the meeting to order at 3:05 pm REPORT OF POSTING OF AGENDA: Staff reported that the agenda was posted by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday December 4, 2008 at the City Hall exterior bulletin board and the Department of Planning Services counter. 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS None 2. CONSENT ITEMS: None 3. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW ITEMS: 3.3144 – A Restudy item: Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility for review and approval of color for the metal roof shade structure at 4575 E. Mesquite Avenue. Marcus Fuller made the staff presentation; he reminded the Committee of the previous review in which some suggestions were made on how to improve proposed color by the design team. The Committee unanimously agreed that the applicant has made all the required changes and therefore recommended approval of the project. Motion to approve was made by Doug Hudson and seconded by Lance O’Donnell. Vote was 6-0 SP 08-006 – Implementation of a new sign program for the future Gene Autry Plaza located at the southeast corner of Gene Autry Trail and Ramon Road. David Newell made the staff presentation. The Committee members were concerned with the proposed monument signs and the overall size of the proposed wall signs on the two anchor stores. The Committee also wanted to know more about the addition of the Lowes signage on the monument sign raising questions about future maintenance and access issues. After a lengthy discussion involving the size of the wall signs, the location of public art at the site and the overall concept of the sign program, the committee recommended that the item be restudied by a vote of 5-0-1 (Chair Jim Cioffi abstained). 5.1160-PD 341 – Final development plans of a previously approved 4-story , 126-room Marriott Residence Inn to be located along East Tahquitz Canyon Way and west of Hermosa Drive. The Marriott Residence Inn is part of a mixed-use development by Nexus that will consist of two hotels and retail commercial uses to be built in phases. Edward O. Robertson made the staff presentation. Two members of the Committee, Chair Jim Cioffi and Lance O’Donnell disclosed that the applicant met with them for some suggestions and inputs on what the City would like to see on the architectural design. The Committee concurred that the architecture is great and that details were wonderful. The committee encouraged the architect to simply some parts of the overall design and to incorporate additional solar control components to the design. The applicant and the architect agreed with all the comments and also agreed to continue the AAC review process to the next meeting. The continuation will allow the architect time to modify the design and incorporate the positive comments from the AAC. The Committee unanimously voted to continue the item to the next meeting. 4. MISCELLANEOUS: None ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, Chair Jim Cioffi declared the meeting adjourned at 5:25 pm.
