Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA. 92262 Atnn: Clerk of the Board Re: Written letter to be entered in the Public record and made available for public Inspection for the July 25, 2024 (5:30PM) Palm Springs City Council meeting - Agenda Item: 1.O. (purchase of fourteen (14) UAV's (drones) and associated services) Dear current City Council members, This letter is in opposition to having city resources spent on devices that will take local police officers out of their active role as peacekeepers. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) should be controlled by individuals that won't take enforcement agency officials away from their duties as peacekeepers. The action of using UAV's to montoir residents of the Palm Springs community is unsettling and problematic to really keeping people safe. Any frying devices overhead has the potential of causing harm to people and property on the ground. UAV's mission should ONLY be used as a "tool" for potential "Search and Rescue" events. Other uses stated in the Citys staff report such as "catalytic converter theft" recovery is nonsensical and a extreme "spin" statement to falsely show how new devices can solve a problem that local police currently can not. Of course privacy concerns over the willingness of local governmental agencies to "spy" on private property will need to be addressed prio to such an invasion on residents rights to be safe in their homes/properties. Other City Councils (La Quinta) recently made missleading verbal comments of how Palm Springs City will be using drones to catch speeders. Misinformation is common place among local governmental agencies (Cities) - help curve such language by doing the right thing - have drones operated by non-police officials and ONLY used those devices for lifesaving missions (Search and Rescue operations).
