To be read as a public comment for tonight’s meeting: In regards to agenda Items: 8.E Formation of Ad Hoc Design Review Committee 8.F Formation of Ad Hoc Master Plan Review Committee The Palm Springs International Airport is growing quickly, and many substantial changes will no doubt need to take place in the coming years. However, insensitive alterations over the past several years have turned our formerly elegant and architecturally significant airport into a cluttered and banal facility. The internationally recognized Palm Springs Style helps propel the economy of the entire Valley. And Palm Springs has a unique role as a design & architecture destination—Modernism Week alone has an economic impact of over $60 million. Yet it’s telling that in the four pages of Goals & Objectives in the current master plan, there is no mention of design, architecture or art. Service and efficiency are of course paramount in an airport plan, but a Vision that includes a high level of design and architecture, and incorporates large-scale public art, needs to be included and emphasized in the master plan. And forming design review committees of local professionals who understand our unique design and architecture, and who can assist in decision-making, is a great step towards creating a positive first impression for the visitors we depend on.
