HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 1EFrom:Max Dirdah-ABM To:City Clerk; City Council; Ron deHarte; Jeffrey Bernstein; Lisa Middleton; Christy Holstege; Grace Garner Subject:Pickleball Expansion at Demuth Park Date:Tuesday, June 25, 2024 6:19:54 PM Dear City Council Members, My name is Max Dirdah, and I play Pickleball at Demuth Park almost everyday (whenever I can). I am a huge supporter of the expansion, and have attended multiple community meetings as well as Parks & Rec commission meetings. I am also in the Sustainability Commission. I would like to bring to your attention a very important topic which I have raised in both community meetings and also the various other public meetings, and that is Shade Structure. We live in a very hot climate, with temperatures exceeding 120+ and with the climate change, it will not get any better. I am appalled to see that none of the pickleball courts have any coverings or shade over them, despite the fact that I mentioned it so many times to ad-Hoc committee, and the consulting company. I would like to bring this to your attention, as this is very much needed for the safety of our residents and visitors alike. I play in the afternoons and know how difficult it is when there is no shade. Especially that we are losing some of the trees that we used as shade. I urge you to please look into the already completed Pickleball projects throughout the country and see that so many of them have shaded courts. Some of the cities are: 1. Rockwall, TX -https://www.rockwall.com/documents/newsletter/2021/City%20Notes%20December%202021.pdf 2. Naples, FL: https://naplespickleballcenter.info/about 3. Daytona Beach: https://www.daytonabeach.com/listings/pictona-at-holly-hill/2282/ 4. Mesa, AZ: https://www.pickleheads.com/courts/us/arizona/mesa/legacy-bell-bank-park Article of several Pickleball courts: https://sportsplanningguide.com/new-or-newly-renovated- pickleball-courts-for-tournaments/ The list goes on. These are all already built, not even in the design phase. I urge you to demand a shade structure over some of the courts while still maintaining the same timeline and cost. Below are examples of which I believe are cost effective shade structures: 1.https://apollosunguard.com/2023/05/17/shading-americas-fastest-growing-sport/ 2.https://outdoorworkoutsupply.com/products/panorama-shade-structure-pickleball-court-style- shade 3.https://www.creativeshadesolutions.com/shade-sails-over-pickle-ball-court/ Thank you very much for your time and I apologize for the lengthy email. 06/27/2024 Public Comment Item 1E Thank you, Max 06/27/2024 Public Comment Item 1E
