I have lived here for 20 years. I am 78 years old, I am white, middle-class, fairly well-read and traveled. I pay taxes in Palm Springs, Riverside County, etc. I closely watch the actions of the PS City Council and the Planning Commission. I am appalled at how poorly the Commission (and the City) has handled the most recent location of the Marilyn Monroe statue: I.What city in their right mind builds a road, i.e., Museum Way (conforming to one of the tenets of Prop. J that the citizens of Palm Springs voted for in 2011) that completely cuts off access to the entity that the road was built to reach? II.Why does a city adopt a “Downtown Specific Plan” and then vote to vacate it piece by piece to support special interests in the city? Why have a specific plan at all? III.How is it that the issue of vacating Museum Way comes before the Commission 4 days before 3 Commissioners’ terms are up (half the Commission)? Are the above City’s special interests afraid that new Commission members might not be as pliable as current members? As for moving this “very heavy statue” - somehow someone has found enough money to move it at least twice in Palm Springs. I’m sure the City, private funders, interested parties, could raise enough money to move it 50 yards to a place where it would continue to be accessible enough to play a role in tourist development, tourist adulation, and provide endless fodder for conversation and critique. If not, perhaps Cathedral City would like to install it at the Mary Pickford Theater where it probably really belongs. I won’t even go into the question of “What is art?”.
