Dear Planning Commission Members: I am a permanent voting resident of District 4 in Palm Springs. For some time I have watched, with great concern, the City’s march toward vacating the portion of Museum Way between Belardo and Museum Drive in order to accommodate the request of PS Resorts that the current location of the Marilyn sculpture be made permanent. PS Resorts has not shown that the current location, as opposed to a location in the park that is immediately adjacent, is essential in order to achieve the worthwhile goal of increasing tourism and patronage of downtown businesses. As has been expressed by numerous Palm Springs residents, the current location blocks the view of the conic front facade of the Museum. And for what compelling reason? Surely a location immediately adjacent in the park would allow the city to achieve its goal of enhancing tourism and supporting downtown businesses, while also addressing the very real concerns of those, like I, who are very concerned about blocking the view of the museum I also do not understand why an issue as controversial as this one would be relegated to the Consent Agenda of the Planning Committee meeting. It seems to me that the Commission would benefit from having as much input as possible and engaging in robust debate before making a decision as far-reaching and permanent as this. I urge the Commission to work out a compromise to the issue that would allow for the statue to remain, but just not in the current location that blocks the view of the facade of the Museum.
