To the Palm Springs Planning Commission:
My name is Jonathan Horowitz. I am an artist and have lived in Palm Springs for 11 years. For me, the Palm
Springs Art Museum is one of the city’s greatest assets. The architecture is magnificent, and the exhibitions are of
international, cultural importance. I, like every other resident know, find the placement of the Marilyn Monroe in
front of the building to be utterly confounding. Why in the world is the closure of a street and the placement of this
statue in front of the Museum being pushed forward, when the statue could easily be installed at the original,
approved site? I urge you, please, vote to move the statue. P.S. resorts would get their tourist attraction and the
people who care about art and architecture would get the sightline to the Museum back. Palm Springs would still, in
my opinion, be tarnished by a vulgar, sexist roadside attraction. It’s also, by the way, a really, really bad work of art.
But that’s just my opinion. Moving the statue is a compromise. It will end this conflict once and for all. Everyone
can't get their way, but I think this is a solution that everyone can live with.
Thank you for your consideration.
