Please repaint the lane markings. They are all dirty and no one knows which lane they are in. Thanks Joe Yakimow. Sent from my iPhone 06/13/2024 Public Comment Non Agenda To: Palm Springs Planning Commission Re: Vacating Museum Way CC: Christopher Hadwin, Palm Springs Planning Director; Committee to Relocate Marilyn I am writing as a year-round citizen of Palm Springs. I have lived here for 20 years. I am 78 years old, I am white, middle-class, fairly well-read and traveled. I pay taxes in Palm Springs, Riverside County, etc. I closely watch the actions of the PS City Council and the Planning Commission. I am appalled at how poorly the Commission (and the City) has handled the most recent location of the Marilyn Monroe statue: I.What city in their right mind builds a road, i.e., Museum Way (conforming to one of the tenets of Prop. J that the citizens of Palm Springs voted for in 2011) that completely cuts off access to the entity that the road was built to reach? II.Why does a city adopt a “Downtown Specific Plan” and then vote to vacate it piece by piece to support special interests in the city? Why have a specific plan at all? III.How is it that the issue of vacating Museum Way comes before the Commission 4 days before 3 Commissioners’ terms are up (half the Commission)? Are the above City’s special interests afraid that new Commission members might not be as pliable as current members? As for moving this “very heavy statue” - somehow someone has found enough money to move it at least twice in Palm Springs. I’m sure the City, private funders, interested parties, could raise enough money to move it 50 yards to a place where it would continue to be accessible enough to play a role in tourist development, tourist adulation, and provide endless fodder for conversation and critique. If not, perhaps Cathedral City would like to install it at the Mary Pickford Theater where it probably really belongs. I won’t even go into the question of “What is art?”. As a former mayor and fellow civic leader, I know that tackling the harms caused by historical injustices is difficult. I also know that it is the right thing to do and is the only way to facilitate healing. We must collectively address historical harms for a stronger California. The destruction of Section 14 not only forced hundreds of families out of their homes, but also took one of the most fundamental human needs away from them: a sense of security and belonging. The survivors have shown incredible resilience in their push for recognition and restitution. They have carried the weight of this historical injustice for far too long. The time has come to make amends. This is a moment of opportunity for Palm Springs. You can be a powerful national example of reconciliation and restorative justice, which would resonate far beyond the borders of your community. It would show our country that Southern California is a place where we not only acknowledge the past, but take action to create a better future. I hope you can come together to address this historical injustice and show the nation what’s possible . I look forward to seeing all the ways you will lead Palm Springs forward by reaching a fair and just resolution with the Section 14 Survivors – allowing both the survivors and the community to begin a new chapter of healing. Sincerely, Lindsey P. I object to a group of non-elected, profit driven individuals hi jacking the general plan for their personal financial gain. The Planning Commission report does not contain any information regarding the following: What effect will the road closure have on emergency and other access issues when construction is completed for the planned hotel or any other structure that may occupy the vacant lot adjacent to Museum Way? How will the closure affect traffic flow and parking when future construction is completed: What are the environment impacts? Desert Water Agency will seal off a main water line if the closure is enacted. What is the cost of this water main construction and who will bear the cost? How will this affect the future construction on the vacant lot? The plan does not address the alternative to move the statute 100 feet into the park as per original plans and concept contained in the original general plan. I urge you to keep the Museum Way open. Dear Palm Springs Planning Commission, 06/27/2024 Public Comment Non Agenda Anyone who has followed the slow rebirth of downtown Palm Springs knows that the Downtown Plan is radically different from the community consensus resulting from the “visioning sessions” that the City sponsored in 2011. Dreams of a town square open from Palm Canyon to the Palm Springs Museum were dashed years ago. But one of the few things on the community wish list that remains on the Downtown Plan is a new through street linking Palm Canyon to The Palm Springs Art Museum. Museum Way as it was finally named is more of an alley than the “broad boulevard” that was promised, but it did provide the view corridor to our culturally and architecturally significant Museum. Then, the City illegally closed the street and placed Forever Marilyn blocking the Museum. Now the City wants to amend the Plan to permanently close Museum Way from Belardo to Museum Drive for the purpose of permanently hosting the Forever Marilyn statue. This is bad planning, bad faith, Illegal and a betrayal of the community input the Palm Springs City Council solicited. As you will recall. We citizens of Palm Springs voted ourselves a 1% tax increase to pay for this redevelopment. Please find a new forever home for Marilyn and reopen the street we were promised. We urge you to reject the application to vacate Museum Way. Thank you. Kathy Weremiuk, Lauri Alyaian, Carl Baker, Scott Miller, David Murphy, and Robert Rotman —- members of the Palm Springs Planning Commission, Consider one last time the implication of vacating a portion of Museum Way between Belardo & Museum Drive. This decision would forever block an established & City-planned circulation through the heart of town! Imagine, for a moment, if there was a proposal to put a sculpture in the middle of Palm Canyon Drive. Would you consent to THAT? What makes Museum Way so different? 06/27/2024 Public Comment Non Agenda Urban Planning is the heart of your work. Trust your instincts. Make decisions that make you proud.
