Central Homicide Unit
Sergeant Thurm I.D. #2805 (951) 955-2777
Detective Dickey (primary) I.D. #4204 (951) 955-2777
DETAILS:
On Thursday, August 8, 2019, investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department
Central Homicide responded to an on -duty (officer / deputy) involved shooting in the city of Palm
Springs. Dispatchers from the Palm Springs Police Department received reports from civilians of
a male armed with a knife walking along the public roadway making verbal threats as he
approached pedestrians. Palm Springs Police Officers arrived and contacted the male subject,
who became physical with the responding officers. In the course of the physical confrontation, an
officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect sustained non -fatal injuries, when struck by
officer gunfire.
Pursuant to the on -going investigation, Case Agent, Detective Dickey requested I respond
to the crime scene for a follow up canvass effort— in an attempt to locate a possible knife, and / or
20 additional witnesses and media / surveillance.

August 13, 2019
On August 13, 2019, during the light of day, Detective Dickey and I responded to the
intersection of the crime scene and conducted a cursory search of the general area, with an
emphasis on the north perimeter "Bank of America" landscape area, which is directly adjacent to
where the shooting occurred. The emphasis was placed on this area because there is / was a
heavy range of floral ground cover.
I walked the entire perimeter of the floral covering, as well as the stucco retaining wall
borders along the north -south traversing walkways of the east and west sides of the building.
Neither Detective Dickey nor I located a knife or facsimile thereof. Detective Dickey located and
obtained a witness statement from a subject who had direct contact with the suspect (refer to
Detective Dickey's supplemental report for further information).
We also checked the local businesses for additional surveillance, however were not
successful with locating any business owners, who might have been in possession of additional
surveillance footage.
August 20, 2019
On August 20, 2019, Detective Dickey and responded back to the crime scene area, in an
additional attempt to locate any items of evidentiary value, to include an edged weapon or
facsimile within the area categorized as the crime scene back on August 8, 2019.

Detective Dickey and I then responded to a local hotel (Motel 6) near the intersection of the
crime scene and inquired about the camera angles for street side surveillance. We were told that
their camera angles captured a portion of the public street near the crime scene (refer to Detective
Dickey's supplemental report for further details of possible footage of the August 81h incident).
This case was continued to the Central Homicide Unit for further investigation.
