On 08/08/19, at approximately 1630 hours, while assigned as a Detective for the City of
Palm Springs, in the City of Palm Springs, within the County of Riverside, I responded to
the area of 500 S. Palm Canyon Drive, in reference an Officer involved shooting.
OFFICER STATEMENT:
I arrived on scene and contacted Sgt. Stjerne who requested I obtain any witness
statements. Sgt. Stjerne directed me to the north east corner of Camino Parocela and S.
Palm Canyon Drive and obtain statements from possible witnesses. I arrived at the
mentioned intersection and noticed Detective Escallada and Detective Kasal were
contacting a male and female. I approached a female who indicated she was the daughter
of the male and female subjects Detective Escallada and Detective Kasal were contacting.
The female identified herself as ( provided me the
following statement, in summary:
stated she was in a vehicle with her mother and father heading northbound on
Indian Canyon Drive passing Camino Parocela when they all noticed an altercation
outside a Barbershop (520 S. Indian Canyon Drive). The vehicle she was in stopped and
she and her parents exited the vehicle and her mother began recording thinking a fight
was about to ensue. noticed as a male subject was being verbally aggressive
towards other subjects challenging them to fight. The aggressive subject (S1) was

described as a White male adult, approximately 50 years of age, thin build, approximately
5'09", wearing an unknown colored hat, and tan colored shirt.
(Si) was yelling at approximately 4 other subjects near the Barbershop calling them
"Faggots" and many other derogatory names. noticed that most of the name
calling was towards another subject (S2). The other subject was described as a Hispanic
male adult approximately 30-20 years age, short in stature, medium build, wearing a tan
colored shirt, and dark colored pants.
noticed (S1) pull out an unknown colored knife and was threatening (S2) and
other subjects to stab them, while challenging them to fight. stated all subjects
including (S2) entered the Barbershop and (Si) walked away. and her parents
entered their vehicle and continued on her way. and her parents heard news that
(S1) had been arrested and her parents drove back to the scene to see what had happened.
I then walked over to 520 S. Indian Canyon Drive and contacted the owner of the
Barbershop. The owner of the Barbershop matched the description of (S2) and identified
himself as ( ). provided me the following statement,
in summary:
stated he was inside the Barbershop (520 S. Indian Canyon Drive) when a male
subject walked in (S1). described the subject as a White male adult,
approximately 37 years of age, weighing approximately 200 lbs, wearing a hat, and
having an unknown tattoo on his right arm.

stated (Si) walked inside the Barbershop and demanded a haircut using an
aggressive posture and a loud tone of voice. told him he was not going to provide
service to (Si) and needed to leave his shop. (Si) began making derogatory remarks
calling him a faggot and other racial slurs. asked (Si) to step outside so he could
fight him. (Si) exited the shop and continued calling names and derogatory slurs.
(Si) pulled out a folding knife from person and told he would stab him. The
folding knife had an approximate 3 inch blade with a black handle. stated he did
not fear for his life as (Si) threatened him. stated, he was not afraid at a little
knife but kept his distance and called police to report the incident. walked inside
the barbershop soon after. (Si) left the area walking southbound on Indian Canyon Drive.
