Subj: Short term rental violation appeal
Good afternoon to all. I would like to start by thanking the City of Palm Springs and this board for
allowing me this platform to speak. I would first like to give a little bit of background as to who I am and
why I’m unable to attend this meeting in person. As mentioned in my original appeal submission, I’m an
active-duty U.S. Marine, Major serving overseas in Colombia. Colombia is currently designated as a
Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger country due to its current state. U.S. service member’s mission in
Colombia is to combat terrorism and transitional organized crime that can potentially reach U.S. soil. I
mention this to highlight the high-level of operational tempo this job requires. As a senior officer in the
country, I’m constantly coordinating with Colombian military and police forces as well as traveling all
over the country to support ongoing operations. In addition to offensive operations, we are also
involved with humanitarian support throughout the country. Over the past few months, we coordinated
for a U.S. hospital ship, USNS Comfort, to come to Colombia and provide health services for over 1400
members.
I understand I was in the wrong by operating a short-term rental without a certificate. When I first
purchased the property, the previous owner was operating the property as a short-term rental, and I
was never notified a permit was necessary. Regardless, I understand it was my job to do the research
and I failed. Despite my oversight, I’m requesting some understanding and consideration from you
based on my circumstances. Once I received the notice, I ceased operations, and the property is
currently up for sale. I’ve learned from this event and will be sure to be more present and involved with
all matters of my life in the future.
I thank you for your time and considerations.
