Hello City Council,
My name is Karen Sylvester and I am a survivor. Some time ago, the City of Palm Springs
apologized to Section 14 for the terrible atrocity that had occurred. There were promises also
made by you to us. In addition, your City Manager issued a Directive to meet with Section 14
to resolve this matter. First, thank you for the apology. However, it has been nearly three
years and we have not been able to achieve anything resembling a solution. Next, City
Council, please listen carefully. We must resolve this matter at once as prolonging this
benefits no one. Not to mention everyone's time and the mounting costs that are being
expended by all parties involved. Let's sit down face to face and solve this matter as soon as
possible. Thank you

Being born and raised on Section 14, my life was devastated and traumatized when we were forced from our home.
At 14 years old, my family moved to a mostly white neighborhood, which changed my life. I learned about racism
and hate from my new neighbors. Within 2 years the white people had all moved away. Many people want to say
that it was such a long time ago, and why are we fighting for reparations now. I’m fighting because racism is hard for
me to ignore, when I still see it all around me. And I’m fighting for my parents, who were too afraid to fight, for fear
of repercussions. I am not afraid to speak up and to say the city was wrong in the way they evicted us and left us out
in the cold, to fend for ourselves. No, the longer the city wants to stall and prolong making amends, the stronger we
become.
Thank you,
City of Palm Springs
