I hope you drill down to find out how a cost overrun of about120% happened. I support this project but spending 34 million dollars for renovations seems very excessive. Where did the committee go wrong? And do we really delay other important city projects like the fire station? New infrastructure? Road maintenance? We really need to take a long look at this. Now it’s over $30 million.??? I know prices have gone up in every area of life, but how many millions of this ridiculous amount are going into the pockets of architects, construction company owners, and “consultants“?? And why does the city need to foot this bill, what about corporate investors? They’ll put millions of dollars in the building of more private hotels here, find someone with a conscious that wants to do good for the public. (And, “paying back the city“?? Are they saying with a straight face that this venue is going to generate over $20 million in profit in the next few decades? Their hearts might be in the right place, but this whole scheme is starting to make the people in charge of it highly look suspicious.) I'm reading that they will "pay it back." 1. I didn't know The City was a bank that provides loans. 2. Sometimes foundations don't raise enough money to do what they want to do. That's life. 3. MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you do this for this particular foundation, every foundation, non-profit, charity in town is going to say, "what about me?" Like I said before, restoring The Plaza Theatre is a VERY admirable endeavor, but not under the current scenario. Restoring the Plaza Theatre is a TRULY ADMIRABLE ENDEVOR, but this entire situation is so full of holes, I actually can't believe what I am reading. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS CAREFULLY, THE ENTIRE CITY MAY REVOLT ON THIS ONE.   12/14/2023 Public Comment Item 3A & 3B From:Jeffrey Bernstein To:City Clerk Subject:Fwd: Plaza Theatre Funding Date:Thursday, December 14, 2023 9:28:46 AM Thank you! Mayor Bernstein (as of 5:30pm!), I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the Plaza Theatre project. I believe it is a vitally important cultural institution that carries with it so many important memories from the past. With a complete restoration, the Plaza project represents the future strength and vitality of the City of Palm Springs. The dedication and work of the Plaza Theatre Foundation is remarkable raising millions of private dollars for a City asset. The passion and commitment the Foundation has for this project and the City of Palm Springs has been so refreshing to watch first-hard over this past year. The Oak View Group, our founders and ownership, committed $1 million to the restoration of the Plaza Theatre in early 2023. We are completely invested in this project and are committed to its success. We are excited to work together with the Foundation and you to return this prized asset to a functioning hub of cultural and diverse entertainment serving as a positive generator of economic and tourism activity for the City of Palm Springs. Personally, I will be leading this project on behalf of Oak View Group. Our CEO, Tim Leiweke, made this commitment to the leadership of the Foundation nearly 12 months ago. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to manage all types of venues. My first job as a venue manager was managing a performing arts center complex. I am passionate about this project and excited to work with all of you to make it a success. I can’t wait to see the impact of 100+ new events happening in downtown Palm Springs annually. On behalf of everyone at OVG, Acrisure Arena, and the Coachella Valley Firebirds, we wholeheartedly support this project and are excited to play a part in its future success.
