Dear [Representative position will go here] [Representative name will go here],
When you meet on December 4th to consider whether or not to adopt a measure
that would allow Forever Marilyn to stay where she is, please note the size of
group opposing her current location and the overwhelming majority in Palm
Springs who don’t want to see her moved. She is beloved in our city, and Palm
Springs should be focused on other, more pertinent issues.

I would like to voice my opinion regarding the Forever Marilyn sculpture and her
current location in the City of Palm Springs. This really is a great location, and I
really enjoy seeing it every time I’m downtown. I hope you will save the time and
expense of a special election by allowing the statue to remain in place by adopting
the initiative that will be put forth for discussion and a vote at the December 4,

Dear Mayor Garner and Members of the Palm Springs City Council,
I understand that the Council is going to consider a possible ballot measure
whether or not to”vacate” Museum Way as a street and leave the Marilyn statue
in place permanently.
I am writing to urge you to place this decision on the ballot, so that the citizens of
Palm Springs can decide whether her current location is the best place for her to
be. I know that Marilyn has become a very popular tourist attraction. I think,
however, that she is located in the wrong place.

Public Comment
Museum Way was meant to provide an open corridor between Palm Canyon
Drive and the Palm Springs Art Museum. When the revised downtown plan was
conceived, it was felt that a clear view of the Art Museum, E. Stewart Williams’
modern masterpiece, was a priority. Marilyn’s current location blocks that view.
Architectural historian Peter Moruzzi has stated: "Due to its architectural
distinction and monumental presence as the city’s premier cultural institution, it
was officially designated a Palm Springs Class One Historic Site – and also listed
in the highly prestigious National Register of Historic Places.” (Desert Sun
November 12, 2023) Thus it makes sense that the Art Museum should be clearly
visible from our major artery.
In addition to this, my understanding is that eventually there will be a hotel or
condos in the current vacant lots along Museum Way. It will be essential to have
an unobstructed street for access to those buildings for residents and emergency
vehicles. Having Museum Way “vacated” will prohibit this necessary access. So
it becomes a safety issue.
In my opinion there are other places Marilyn could be successfully placed:
Frances Stevens Park, Ruth Hardy Park, or Sunrise Park. Placing her in one of
the parks would provide the ambient space necessary to highlight her and also
allow tourists to visit.
Placing the question of Museum Way’s “vacation” and thus Marilyn’s relocation
on the March ballot would give all of us a chance to weigh in on the issue.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Paul Zak

There has been a great deal of news surrounding Forever Marilyn, and I think the small group of

Dear Christy Holstege (Councilmember), District 4,
My husband and I have been visiting PS for more than a decade, and just recently
purchased a condo in the Baristo neighborhood. Having seen Marilyn when she
first came to PS, we were thrilled when she returned, and even more thrilled at her
placement on Museum Way. She acts as an Ambassador welcoming visitors (and
residents) to the Museum and its environs.
We are happy to hear you are considering keeping Forever Marilyn where she is
on December 4. Yes, a ballot measure for the people to decide is an option, but
keeping where she is located now is a decision the City Council can and should
make. Please vote to amend the Downtown Specific Plan to allow Marilyn to stay,
and create a permanent pedestrian mall of Museum Way on December 4.

Dear Christy Holstege (Councilmember), District 4,
When you meet on December 4th to consider whether or not to adopt a measure
that would allow Forever Marilyn to stay where she is, please note the size of
group opposing her current location and the overwhelming majority in Palm
Springs who don’t want to see her moved. She is beloved in our city, and Palm
Springs should be focused on other, more pertinent issues.
I am a repeat visitor for 20 years... Marilyn is a part of this wonderful destination
that I love so much.
She's the gate to art museum Which encourage everyone to get in, she's at the
perfect place and I can't understand why you should remove her from there! It
should be such a stupid silly decision! But you're not and you will do whatever
you can to keep this great spot of Palm Springs as Eiffel tower in Paris, statue of
liberty in NYC...
Don't take the wrong decision: it's on your hand to be a part of history!
Thanks for me and all visitors.
Sincerely,
Gilles Gilles

Good afternoon to you all, forgive me if you have received this already.
I would like to take a moment and share my perspective on the discussions on the
location of the Marilyn Statue. As you know, in my experiences I have led a number of
different brands in the hospitality industry.
I have been so proud of the work that has been done over the past decade to enhance
the tourism experiences that have shaped the landscape of Palm Springs proper and
the surrounding cities. To become a world renowned is no easy task. The work that the
city has helped shape has not only strengthened the brand of Palm Springs but has
changed the lives for all the people that live and work in Palm Springs. The data is clear
on the economic impact of the decisions that have been made and the benefits that,
when monetized are compelling and certainly benefit the City of Palm Springs.
The economics impact of tourism on the city is important to the conversation:
The economic impact as of 2022 to Greater Palm Springs is $8.7 Billion dollars.
The tourism industry created 49,137 jobs in the marketplace.
There was $812 Million dollars in state and local taxes created.
12/04/2023
Public Comment
Visitor volume in a post covid environment was 14.1 million, with spending of
$7.1 Billion dollars, exceeding pre-COVID - 19.
Visitors spent 21% of their dollars on retail and an additional 13% on
recreational experiences.
It is a good to be a healthy, thriving destination. Amplifying these strategies for the
future is cornerstone to the fiscal health of the city.
These important impact dollars allow for greater capital expenditures, improved asset
management, and enhancements of technologies that will help the city with its
innovation platform.
From a historical perspective, look at 2008 and the impact of the economic down cycle
had on our city. Today, you have not only weathered COVID -19 in a caring and
compassionate fashion, your economic health and the future of the city’s fiscal health
is certainly on strong footings. The reality is that every crisis creates a learning
opportunity. The measure of success is in what you do with that education and how
you effect change for the future that matters most. This city should be very proud of
the evolution of its business model, the fiscal security systems you have put in, and the
protection of services you offer the citizenship of this community. Critical to all of this
is the alignment the city has with the tourism leadership of the valley.
One of the most important learnings is that the business community and the city must
work in concert with each other for the greater good of all stakeholders. In fact, these
joint ventures are one of the true competitive advantages that the city has. I have seen
no other city embrace this strategy as well as Palm Springs. These strategies have stood
the test of time and now, are a way of doing business here in Palm Springs.
One entity is never as strong when it stands alone. Clearly, the means is which the
tourism industry and the city have worked together has benefited all the stakeholders,
in a valuable fashion. When cities are conflicted with the industries that are to thrive
within their boundaries, success is never achieved. You are all very aware of that. In this
community, tourists and residents can be strange bedfellows. The services the
community receives are supported/created from the taxes the lodging and tourism
community create.
Having had the luxury of working in a variety of different cities, I can look across a
broad landscape of how cities are run, the ways and means in which success in tourism
and fiscal health is achieved. Because of the successes you had working side by side
with the business community, Palm Springs has a unique competitive advantage from
other cities that we compete with the for the tourism development and brands that
will add value to Palm Springs. World Class lodging companies are happy to explore
opportunities in our city.
That does not mean we do not have aggressive competitors. Places like Austin and

Portland once we never considered to be a competitive threat, are now on our radar.
Lodging companies want to be there as well.
There are compelling common denominators with healthy cities and thriving lodging
companies:
The worlds leading lodging companies all know that customer satisfaction is not
the measure of success. Loyalty is. The same standard applies to people who
reside in Palm Springs.
To get to loyalty, the art of service, and the science of experience creation is
required. World class brands demand that the experiences that the cities they
place their brands have a long-term view on the experience economies of the
future.
The key pillars they look for are not different in many cases then the pillars that
the brand of Palm Springs professes as well. Health and wellness, cultural
richness, culinary arts, unique entertainment and the respect and appreciation
of a diverse cultures and the benefit it brings destinations.
They desire for people to have a great pedestrian experiences, reducing the
need for unnecessary use of vehicles and the impact that can have on
environmental stewardship. It creates vibrancy, which everyone wants.
They focus on reward programs. Hiton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt
and IHG One are vital. They allow the global traveler access to great destinations,
with great experiences. Those 4 brands alone represent 500 million travelers.
Recently, Marriott Bonvoy featured Palm Springs on its global communication
platform, side by side of images of the Eiffel Tower and Brooklyn Bridge, The
Marilyn Statue was shown as an iconic symbol of Palm Springs.
You all are aware that great brands attract great brands. When you blend that with the
experience economy, where mass customization is required, it is no surprise that the
growth of experiences continue here in Palm Springs and the surrounding
communities. Thanks to you and many others, you can see the landscape continue to
evolve, which is exactly the plan you want executed.
As the evolution of the experiences continues to allow the people who love the Palm
Springs experience to keep coming back as they too see the new experiences, they
create an evocative emotional relationship with people. You are developing a loyalty
strategy that attracts new people and well as those who may someday, be residence of
the community. You are doing a marvelous job protecting the future of the city and
improving the experiences for the residents and visitors as well.
Here are meaningful examples:

1. Acrisure Arena. This $400 million dollar arena will evolve and thrive for the
future. It is beautifully managed and is a state-of-the-art facility. As it matures, it
will attract a new channel of customers to the tourism industry.

students of the future, but the community at large. It will become a place of
innovation and experiences for everyone.
3. The state-of-the-art Cultural Center and World Class Spa, Se`c- he, created by the
Aqua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians will demonstrate unique cultural
experiences, enhance the brand, and amplify our pillar of health and wellness.
4. The revitalization of Palm Canyon with the Kimpton and the retail corridors,

5. The development of the residential additions to the city will only further activate
the retail corridors, attracting more brands, with better experiences which will
benefit the residences and the tourism community alike.
6. Palm Springs International Airport. The additions of the flights, improved
frequency and the redevelopment and expansions planned to improve our city

7. Palm Springs Air Museum has evolved over the past decade and is widely
considered one of the best aeronautical museums in the country. The ongoing
innovations and additions of the number of planes has made it a true destination
within a destination.
8. The Thompson Hotel will be an important development for North Palm Canyon.
This world class brand of Lifestyle Luxury will give the luxury Hyatt customers a
new and unique option for Palm Springs. This development is sure to spawn
additional brand attraction for this important part of the city.
9. Palm Springs Art Museum has new leadership, and the results are quite material.
The enhanced experiences in art and theater have made it iconic place to be in
Palm Springs. The evolution of the programing, the engagement of community
education and its important outreach programs has allowed it once again be one
of the great destinations within the brand of Palm Springs. The museum and the
tourism organizations all work closely together to support the efforts.

10. BNP Tennis Event. This world class event continues to evolve and inspire people
to visit Palm Springs. This event brings together the best tennis players in the
world and the press coverage that we receive is infinite in the impressions it
makes globally.
When I think about all the work that has been done, the billions of dollars spent, the
equity you have developed in the brand, it is most impressive. The global recognition of
the City Palm Springs and all the evolutionary changes on the horizon, I am beside
myself trying to understand why the statue has become such a conflicted issue. I am in
support of leaving the statue where it is. It amplifies the beauty of our mountains,
enriches the park experience and drives business to these important retailers.
Therefore, I deal with what I know and can articulate:
Cultural Icon: Marilyn Monroe is a universally recognized icon, and her
association with Palm Springs strengthens the city’s historical ties to the golden
era of Hollywood.
The statue contributes to the Palm Springs unique identity, differentiating it
from other destinations, who unto themselves, are trying to improve and grow.
They will be competitors.
Memorable Experiences: Modern tourism seek unique experiences. The Marilyn
Monroe statue provides a tangible, memorable spot that people are drawn to.
One would suggest that is enhances everything that surrounds it.
Engagement: Experience-centric attractions encourage deeper engagement with
the destination, leading to retention and improved economics.
Cultural Preservation: Hollywood and the iconic history of that Marilyn
represents is part of the fabric of our history. Promoting our historical and
cultural heritage is important to the storytelling of our brand.
While I understand that some profess that parking is an issue, that traffic is dangerous,
that the statue has infringed on the view corridor, I believe those are very subjective.
Thoughtful urban planning can create solutions that would solve many of these issues.
There was a recent opinion in the Desert Sun that parking is an issue, yet the city
provides a 1200 car parking garage just adjacent to the site. Perhaps wayfinding is a
bigger issue then parking.
The revitalization of the downtown, the additional brands and the attractions that have
been added to the landscape are a compelling part of the business strategy of Palm
Springs. When you blend that with the alignment you have with the tourism and
business communities, good things will continue to be achieved. You have developed
more residential options; you have new brands in the pipeline and the recognition of
why having a pedestrian friendly city adds to the vibrancy of the experiences and
enhances the brand of Palm Springs.
The activation of the new park, the statue, the new dining options all have engaged this

area with unique experiences in a material way. When you move the statue, you put at
risk the work done on the other amenities that are offered.
I love Palm Springs for so many reasons. It has a community of unique and diverse
people, who’s intellect and curiosities are infectious. It is lead by people who care and
are importantly, dedicated and very capable leaders. It honors it rich traditions and
embraces the beauty of this extraordinary landscape.
I recommend we leave Marilyn where it is. Take the learnings that we have garnered
over the past several years and improve the experiences for our guests and residences
alike. Improve the management processes and logistics that are a concern voiced by
some. To start over and move the statue simply seems does not seem pragmatic,
especially when you put at risk the impact it has on the experience economy of Palm
Springs and the desirability of a pedestrian friendly community.

Dear City Council and Staff,
I was happy to hear you are considering keeping Forever Marilyn where she is on December 4. Yes,
you could choose to put out a ballot measure for the people to decide, but I’m not sure why funds
would be spent that way when this community loves her where she is. Everyone I’ve talked to about it
doesn’t understand why this debate continues on. Please vote to amend the Downtown Specific Plan
to allow Marilyn to stay on December 4. As the mayor of the Village of Niles in Illinois I've been
coming out there alongside of my family for over 30 years. I've been pushing public art more now
than ever. You guys are so well recognized for your mid-century modern architecture feel as well as
your art. The statue of Marilyn Monroe is Iconic and every time we visit we always go there and take
pictures. It is the Timeless piece that should be preserved and kept she was part of the generation
that really gave the personality, feel and notoriety to your city which has been going strong for a
century. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any needs or concerns or more of an opinion

Dear City Council and Staff,
Thank you for considering my input for your Special Meeting on December 4th to discuss Forever
Marilyn’s location. Please vote for her to stay where she is. I do not think it is worth taxpayer dollars
to move her, and she gets so much love and attention in her current location. I don’t see any reason
that short stretch of that street could not be closed permanently to accommodate this.

Dear City Council and Staff,
I’d like to share my voice regarding the Forever Marilyn sculpture and its current placement in the City
of Palm Springs. She is in an ideal location, and I hope you will save the time and expense of a special
election by allowing the statue to remain in place by adopting the initiative that will be put forth for
discussion and a vote at the December 4, 2023, meeting.

Dear City Council and Staff,
When you meet on December 4th to consider whether or not to adopt a measure that would allow
Forever Marilyn to stay where she is, please note the size of group opposing her current location and
the overwhelming majority in Palm Springs who don’t want to see her moved. She is beloved in our
city, and Palm Springs should be focused on other, more pertinent issues. ** She’s great where she is.
She’s a great use for that tiny block. She’s already beloved by visitors. Most cities would kill for the
kind of recognition that we already have. Let’s not waste another penny on this issue. **

Dear City Council and Staff,
Good morning.
Just wanted to let you all know… I love the Marilyn statue. And I love it where it is. It’s a great segway
- as a wonderful art piece - to the museum. And does nothing but bring more people to that particular
area.
Therefore, please vote to amend the Downtown Specific Plan on December 4th so that Forever
Marilyn can remain where she is. By and large, I feel the Palm Springs community loves the Forever
Marilyn attraction in its current location, and I hope she can stay. Thank you for considering my input.

Dear City Council and Staff,
I am just one voice in this community, but I know that collectively with my friends and neighbors, I’m
in the majority when I say that we want Forever Marilyn to stay in her current spot. Please vote to
keep her in place at your special meeting on December 4, 2023. We came up with the signatures to
have this added to the ballot and we are confident it will pass, but it would be better for the City of
Palm Springs to save the funds for more pressing city business items.

Dear City Council and Staff,
I heard you will be considering an initiative to keep Forever Marilyn in her current location at a special
meeting on December 4, 2023, and I wanted to share my voice and opinion that she should not be
moved. Thousands of people visit her each month, and it would be detrimental to our tourism
industry to put her somewhere that visitors may have trouble finding – and I’m not even sure what
reason could possibly justify the expense and effort of a move.

Dear City Council and Staff,
I'm a new permanent, year-round resident of Palm Springs. This beautiful city will be my home until
the end of my days. In part, it's a beautiful place because of some of its quirkiness including the very
centrally-placed Forever Marilyn. I ask you to vote to keep Forever Marilyn in place on December 4. I
haven't hear any compelling reasons why she should be moved, and I'm curious if you have.
Thank you for your kind consideration.

Dear City Council and Staff,
Forever Marilyn has become an iconic landmark in Palm Springs, and there is no reason to spend

Marilyn’s location. Please vote for her to stay where she is. I do not think it is worth taxpayer dollars

Please leave the Marilyn statue where it is! She is PERFECT there. Close the raid permanently. There are two other
roads to drive to the museum on either side of the park. She is a huge tourist attraction to downtown, and to the
museum. Do not move her anywhere else!!

Where should the Marilyn statue reside??? What a waste of time, money and resources have been spent and
continue to be spent on this topic!! Council Members, I respectfully ask you to visit its current location on any day
and witness the numerous tourists and locals taking pictures and absolutely enjoying this beautiful piece of art on a
traffic free street! And many “discover” our wonderful art museum while viewing the Marilyn statue. Please stop
the madness and vote to leave her be and get on to more pressing issues concerning our fine city. You and we
deserve better!

I urge the City Council to place the issue on the November ballot for the citizens of Palm Springs to weigh in on.
There is no need to spend more money analyzing what the possible economic benefits have been (something which
is unlikely to ever accurately be quantified), and no need to hold a special election which would cost taxpayer
money. The City Council definitely should not simply amend the Master Plan today to make this temporary closure
permanent. Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Palm Springs City Council Members,
I drive Belardo regularly to cross town and pass Museum Way
each time. I think when originally presented I thought Museum
Way was going to be sort of a grand boulevard from downtown to
the Museum. It is in fact a rather small 2 lane road that does not
lend itself to a lot of vehicular traffic. I believe Museum Way's
highest and best use is to remain as a promenade from Palm
Canyon to the Museum. Some believe that there's a safety issue
with Museum Way not allowing for more cars and traffic in that
area. I disagree; we do not need more traffic going east/west on
that small road. It is rather easy to navigate around the area
without driving down Museum Way.
Regarding Marilyn; I feel she is a positive addition to our
community. In crossing across town regularly visitors are always
at Marilyn and seem to be enjoying themselves. No one is
weeping or protesting. I think she is a draw to the area and to
the Museum and park. Whether you feel she needs to be moved
to another area is up to you but it will diminish visitors to that part
of town and hurt local businesses that benefit from her proximity.
If you feel you need to move her then make that decision but
opening Museum Way to traffic is not the right reason to do that.
Finally, I'd like to see the current park expanded to both sides of
Museum Way. The current park is lovely but rather small. Create
a more expansive downtown park which will draw more visitors
and if need-be move Marilyn to the side; but please keep Museum
Way as a pedestrian path.
Thank you for reading this,

Forever Marilyn stays. Forget traffic. It will be hazardous for pedestrians. Enlarge the plaza area. Add Rotating
sculptures. Keep Forever Marilyn where she is. Can you imagine gridlocked vehicles stuck in those abbreviated
streets? Will everyone wonder why a car went out of context and killed or injured pedestrians? Forget those costly
lawsuits. Leave Marilyn alone. Donate all that lawsuit money for affordable housing. Help those in need.

I am a Palm Springs resident and a strong supporter of our Art Museum. It was imprudent to alter this district's
design plan by vacating the roadway with the Marilyn statue, denying automobile access and the unobstructed view
of our art museum. Proponents of vacating the street must be required to show that tourism would be measurably
harmed if the statue is simply relocated into the adjacent park or some other agreeable location. I request the
council not approve permanently vacating Museum Way and not approve putting the decision to vacate to a public
vote at this time. Supporters of leaving the statue in it’s ’temporary’ location have — in their petitioning —
suggested to the public that the statue must be kept in it's 'temporary' location or it would be removed from Palm
Springs. This is a misrepresentation.

Subject: Museum Way and Marilyn
Dear Mayor and City Council:
I applaud your recent decision to close Museum Way to automobile traffic and create a pedestrian-friendly area in
front of the Pal Springs Art Museum. This will only improve our experience of Palm Springs, as well as make for a
safer special-events area in that iconic location.
I hope, however, that the Council will now make the correct decision with regard to the position of the Marilyn
statue.
By moving the statue a short distance, to the clear area in front of the parking structure just to the north, at the
western terminus of Arenas, Palm Springs can have its (cheese)cake and eat it too.
In that position, Marilyn is still downtown; she is still set off by the mountains; she still has a dramatic street view
leading to her from Palm Canyon Drive; she still has a spot that tourists can safely mingle on without traffic. She is
still in close proximity to the museum and to the restaurants, hotels and shops that are concerned that moving her
will depress attendance at the museum and traffic to their businesses.
This move would also free up that newly created pedestrian area for a variety of events, including any plans for an
amphitheater. These events and usages would also profoundly benefit surrounding businesses, without losing the
draw of Marilyn a few steps away.
I am puzzled by the intransigence of Palm Springs Resorts in this regard. No one is suggesting that the statue be
moved out of Downtown or removed completely. This compromise solution benefits all parties—it is a win-win that
would reflect well of the Solomon-like wisdom of the Council. No one needs to dig in their heels. No one needs to
"lose."
Lastly, I do think that the considerations of the Art Museum and Modernism Week—enormous economic and
cultural boons to Palm Springs—should be considered. Their interests are not at odds with those of Palm Springs
12/4/2023
Public Comment
Resorts—they are one and the same!
I've attached a photo of Marilyn that is never shown in these discussions (or in the Desert Sun or on NBC Palm
Springs, for that matter): it it the view from the museum looking east, which also should be an iconic view out to
Palm Canyon and our beautiful city. It is of a giant woman's butt, mooning the museum and its patrons! (This would
be a laughable small-town foible if it were not in one of the world's top resort towns!)
If the Council makes the right decision about moving Marilyn a short distance, all this controversy goes away,
including the expensive law suits. Each side will get over its reservations, and we can all get on with the other
important issues facing our city.
Thank you!

arguably become the primary viewing lens of today's consumer experience.
There is an argument to be made that for live concerts, the real show is the participants
documenting and illuminating the arena with their phones. Everyone engages in the
performance and the documentation of it. Not only do iPhone users become participants
but also collaborators and curators of visits and actual events.
Charlie Warzel, in her article for The Atlantic, delves into the phenomenon epitomized by
the new Sphere in Las Vegas. She characterizes it as an intensified iteration of the
evolution of live music, where a Sphere performance becomes a massive collective effort
between the audience and performers.
The norm of capturing and documenting travel experiences, restaurant visits, and historic
monuments now extends to the Palm Springs Forever Marilyn Statue. A visit to Palm
Springs feels incomplete without a selfie featuring the Marilyn statue against the backdrop
of picturesque mountains and the Palm Springs Art Museum, destined for your smartphone
and subsequent social media photo or video streams.
The enduring significance of our Forever Marilyn statue as a travel attraction is underscored
in the latest Marriott Bonvoy promotion videos. Among global landmarks like the Eiffel
Tower, the Pyramids, and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Palm Springs Marilyn statue is
prominently featured, emphasizing its iconic status in the realm of travel experiences.
The delight of shared experiences via iPhone documentation and social media enhance the
21st-century interplay among travel memories, performers, and concertgoers. The real
spectacle is found in exploring destinations, enjoying meals, and witnessing performances
through brief clips captured by unfamiliar individuals. Among Palm Springs' captured
attractions, none surpass Forever Marilyn. She forging a visual archive that entices people
to revisit memories, no matter where they call home. RECEIVED

DEVELOPMENT
Today, the Forever Marilyn statue in Downtown serves a role for Palm Springs akin to the
Hollywood actors of the 60s, being the magnet that draws people to the destination and the
muse for the timeless act of documenting, " I was here."
Over 70,000 monthly individuals capture selfies with Marylin, sharing them on global social
media platforms, and provide the Palm Springs Art Museum the exposure and recognition it
previously lacked.
Certainly, moving a well -established icon has the potential to disrupt the identity and charm
of both Downtown Palm Springs and the icon itself. This could affect the local atmosphere
and the Art Museum's connection to the community. The modern emphasis on documenting
experiences may intensify these effects, as'the sense of place plays a crucial role in travel
engagement.
