HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCE PresentationResidential PowerTalk Keeping our communities informed Palm Springs City Council June 29, 2023 0 Our Grid To deliver safe, reliable, and affordable power, we monitor and maintain a vast electricity system 753,000 Transformers 126,000 Miles of Transmission and Distribution Lines 5,900 Circuits 1.7 Million Poles 50,000 Square Miles 1 1 Strengthening and Modernizing the Grid   Infrastructure reliability – updating underground cables, poles, switches, and transformers Wildfire mitigation – hardening infrastructure, bolstering situational awareness capabilities, and enhancing operational practices Transmission – connecting renewables, installing new substations, and updating lines Grid readiness – updating the grid for impacts from new technologies Long-term energy policy – supporting energy storage, electric vehicles, and renewables SCE plans to spend more than $5B each year to maintain, improve, and harden its infrastructure SCE’s investments support safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy for our customers 2022 Capital Investments 36 miles of underground cable replaced 119 miles of overhead conductor replaced for public safety 24.5k distribution poles replaced 4.3k transmission poles replaced 24 underground structure replacements 2 2 Outage Overview 3 Outage Types A maintenance outage is a controlled event where equipment or a portion of the circuit needs to be temporarily taken out of service to allow crews to safely make repairs, or network alterations A repair outage is an unplanned event where a section of the power network losses power unexpectedly due to a fault An emergency outage is a bit of a hybrid, where an unsafe condition requires the immediate action of taking equipment or part of the network out of service to make repairs, often to prevent a larger outage. A rotating outage, also known as rolling blackouts, are controlled events to turn off electricity to selected areas to keep the electricity supply and load in balance 4 Maintenance Outage Process Maintenance outages are entered into SCE’s outage management system (usually less than 13 days before the outage) Outage requests are further reviewed for opportunities to reduce the number of customers impacted and/or reduce the duration of the outage Outage notification letters are distributed to impacted customers 3 to 8 days in advance of the outage (If time does not allow for a letter to be mailed, a door hanger is used) All customers receive automated notifications 11 days in advance of the outage through the communications channel of their choice  (e-mail, text, automated phone call) 5 5 Preparedness is Key Keeping safe during outages 6 Outage Preparedness Kit Create a safety preparedness plan for your family, including any special needs and pets Keep important phone numbers nearby (hospital, doctor, relatives, etc.) Learn how to manually open automatic garage doors or gates Familiarize yourself with your home’s utility boxes and how to turn them off Install surge protectors to help safeguard electronic equipment If considering a generator, consult with a licensed electrician to determine the proper equipment and safe set up 7 7 SCE CUSTOMER PROGRAMS & RESOURCES Services offered: information, charging of mobile and portable medical devices, PSPS outage alert enrollment support, access to water, light snacks, ice and ice vouchers, restrooms, and small insulated bags to keep medication cool Translations services for over 120 languages including American Sign Language (ASL) Partnered with 211 to help customers with Access and Functional Needs (AFN) develop a resiliency plan and enroll in eligible assistance programs 211 provides specialized referrals for customers with AFN experiencing PSPS, and services include connecting customers to shelf-stable food, hot meal delivery, transportation and/or temporary shelter SCE will improve communications methods, including videos utilizing ASL for marketing and PSPS notifications Critical Care Backup Battery program and the In-Event Battery Loan pilot provide eligible customers with a portable backup battery to power a medical device during a PSPS event Rebates on portable batteries and generators for customers residing in high fire risk areas on marketplace.sce.com CUSTOMER RESOURCE CENTERS & COMMUNITY CREW VEHICLES CUSTOMER PROGRAMS CUSTOMER RESILIENCY EQUIPMENT 8 8 Communication Resources Keeping our communities informed 9 Signing Up for Notifications Sign in or set up your account on SCE.com Once signed in, click on Settings 10 10 Sign Up for Notifications - Continued Clicking on the Settings will open some new Options.
