To whom it may concern, I am an architectural historian specialising in Mid-Century modern architecture as well as a professor of design. I have been a regular lecturer at Modernism Week here in Palm Springs for 13 years. As a modernist, preservationist and expert of fine design, I am incredibly excited to see such an impressive 5 star hospitality brand coming to Palm Springs. The beautiful, unique and high quality architecture here in this city is its brand, therefore the approval of this resort will only continue to elevate Palm Spring’s global presence and bring more architecture centric tourism to the area. It would be a great loss if it were lost to another local. Please know that I am in full support of the Auberge Hotel project. Any thing else you require pleas let me know. Dear Mayor Garner and Council members, As an owner in the Historic Palm Springs Tennis Club HOA #2, having the 5 star Auberge hotel is a wonderful addition to our neighborhood. The design and scale of the project is very appropriate for the site and the developer (Richard Weintraub) performance penalty of $1,000,000 shows real motivation to comply with the new project schedule. Thank you for your time and all of your efforts in making our city a unique and beautiful place to live. Dear Mayor Garner, Mayor Pro Tem Bernstein, and Council Members de Harte, Holstege and Middleton: As a full-time resident of Palm Springs who lives less than a block from the subject property, I am writing to you to communicate my support for the request by applicant Richard Weintraub regarding the Orchid Tree project. Since last Fall, as a board member of the Historic Tennis Club Neighborhood Association, I have attended the walkthroughs of the site that are conducted by the Planning Department. I have been impressed by Mr. Weintraub’s responsiveness to the City’s concerns and believe that he truly wants to build a hotel that would be a good fit for the neighborhood and Palm Springs. The fact that he is willing to put up a bond as assurance that he will complete the project in a timely manner is also a positive, particularly compared to the other unfinished hotel projects in our city. The Orchid Tree property has been an eyesore for the neighborhood and Palm Springs for far too long. Moreover, the City has received no TOT revenue or sales tax from it for many years. I urge the City Council to think long-term about the overall benefits from the project, beyond the loss of TOT revenue for the next ten years. This particular project is one block from the heart of downtown Palm Springs, and is the first thing people see when they enter the iconic Historic Tennis Club neighborhood. It has been a blight on the neighborhood for far too long. Mr. Weintraub’s revised design is in keeping the with the character of the neighborhood and will be a major win for the city as well. I urge the you to approve Mr. Weintraub’s reasonable requests. Re: February 9, 2023 Agenda Item 3C - Support for the Orchid Tree Project and Requested Amendments Dear Mayor Garner, Mayor pro tem Bernstein, Councilmembers de Harte, Holstege and Middleton, I am writing to fully support the request by applicant Richard Weintraub for the Orchid Tree project to amend the operation covenant, the TOT allocation, the site plan and the other changes. My husband and I own a condo 3 blocks away from this proposed development and have had the property in the family for over 30 years. The applicant's requests are reasonable. Moreover, the performance penalty of $1 million dollars is sufficient to protect the city's interest and to motivate the applicant to comply with the new project schedule. The applicant has worked hard to maintain the property and upgrade issues identified by the City. Having the Auberge Hotel in our neighborhood will enhance the Tennis Club neighborhood. After a brief rental visit, we did not want to leave. Before the trip was over we purchased a residence and the rest has been a glorious history. We reside in the Historic Tennis Club Neighborhood. We appreciate the synergy of historic neighborhoods and buildings with new development and growth. As we walk to downtown by ourselves and guests we have noted for years the opportunity to make improvements on the block between S Cahuilla Road and S Belardo and bordering Arenas and Baristo. We were excited to hear that progress has been made in design and development for work to potentially begin to restore this block back to fully usable space. I am writing this letter to urge you to approve the plans for the Orchid Tree Project. I have reviewed information and have visited with a number of other residents, and we all believe this is in the best interest of our neighborhood and the community of Palm Springs. Thank you for your attention to this project and for taking the time to read my letter. To whom it may concern, Goodmorning. As long time residents of Palm Springs (30 plus years) we wanted to convey our support to the Auberge project. After reviewing the proposed images of site plans we are greatful that the project will preserve and restore the small cottages and Church building that have long been historical structures and are an important part of early Palm Springs history. Refreshing to learn that the development principles have chosen to restore portions of properties rather than to completely bulldoze and start from scratch. The project will be a wonderful mixture of new and old and once again bring the area back to life. The Auberge has our full support and we wish all involved the very best.
