Public Comment, PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item1O, September 1, 2022 Hello, I am writing to state that I’m not in support of the proposed LOGO design – I find itconfusing; the leaf looks like a Marijuana plant and overall it’s just not up the designstandards of our very sophisticated/design oriented community. Plus it’s just hard to read. Thank you,

Dear City County, I am submitting public comment here on the Palm Springs International Airport brand update,
Agenda Item 10, September 1, 2022. I am both a permanent full-time resident and an architect deeply embedded in
our Palm Springs design community. I would like you to consider a thoughtful process to create a truly appropriate
branded image for the new PSP graphic. Please DO NOT compromise and quickly decide to just use one of the
proposed poorly-conceived concepts that have been presented so far! In fact, please propose a branding process
that will result in a concept that our Palm Springs community can embrace. Today I will fly internationally back to
Palm Springs PSP Airport….and I’ll have pride that you’ll take these words into consideration. Thank you, Robin
Abrahams Architect, Palm Springs

Please go back to the drawing board for an airport logo. This is a world class city with an airport designed by Donal
Wexler. Let’s get a great designer to give it a go. Or have a contest and allow great designers to have a crack at it.

I’m writing to ask that the City Council NOT, repeat NOT approve the logo design for the Palm Springs Airport. We
have so many talented designers in Palm Springs that would have welcomed the opportunity to create a logo that
truly reflects our community. Scrap this logo and put this out to bid locally!!! Thank you for the opportunity to
submit my thoughts.

I am Henry Connell, career Art Director and Graphic Designer (Conde Nast, Time Inc.) and 20-year Palm Springs
resident (full-time 11 years). Having read the brief and reviewed the proposed Aviatrix PSP Brand Presentation, I ask
the City Council to reject the current proposal and continue work on the airport branding project. The submitted
work does not show a deep understanding of Palm Springs design history, respect for the airport's architecture, or
even outstanding graphic design solutions. The deformed PSP letters , in an attempt to simultaneously illustrate
Palm trees and windmills, is awkward and amateurish. The colors seem random and garish. A 5-color palate (let
alone an 11-color palate!) is not a solution. We all know Palm Springs is a design mecca. We must respect the
heritage of the Golden Age of modern design and graphics of which Palm Springs is the world-class example. Airport
branding, as an initial vibe-setter for the visitor, should reflect that.

As a local architectural tour company, I find the new proposal for Palm Springs Airport PSP doesn't reflect the
wonderful legacy of creativity of our city. This garish, childlike idea from a San Diego PR company SHOULD NOT be
used and the opportunity for a local brand professional be considered. This should have been open to local design
professionals who understand our city. DO NOT APPROVE any one of these three proposals for PSP. Sincerely, Kurt

This is a revised version of my letter to the City Council
I’m writing to provide public comment on Agenda Item 1O on the City Council Agenda for
September 1, 2022.
PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE
Tom Dolle
Palm Springs CA
August 28, 2022
Dear City Council,
I am a graphic designer and brand specialist, I ran a New York City design studio for over 30
years, and was an adjunct professor in Pratt Institute Graduate Communications Design for
over 20 years. I have created dozens of branding and signage programs, including recent ones
for Palm Springs Unified School District and DAP Health. I am currently the Creative
Director at Destination PSP in Palm Springs.
After reviewing the design brief (the section titled BACKGROUND) and resulting visual
design solutions for the airport branding project, I strongly encourage the City Council
to reject ALL of the proposed designs.
The design brief is really a marketing brief to promote the airport. There is a big
difference between “branding" a busy public transportation hub with a long-term
solution like a logo and signage, and “marketing" the airport with short-term
promotional solutions to build traffic and awareness.
If this is in fact for the long-term branding of the airport with a logo and signage, it
deserves much more public input and guidance from the design & architectural
community. The Donald Wexler-designed main building is a Class 1 historic property,
and any signage should be carefully considered.
This project fails on a number of fronts:
1. None of the proposed designs takes airport way-finding signage into account. This is the
primary use for most airport branding programs, to help travelers navigate the airport through
a consistent use of color, typography, and graphic elements within the overall signage
program. That would also apply to apps and websites used for airport information. None of the
proposed logos are shown in expanded use this way.
09/01/2022
Public Comment
Item 1O
2. If what is wanted from this program is really a marketing campaign with a logo, then the
proposed designs should show how marketing concepts, images, videos, etc work together
with the logo. T-shirts and airport buses are the least likely applications.
2. The design brief states: "The primary finding of their research was the need for the
Airport to establish a vibrant, unique airport brand that best positions the Airport as
the airport of the entire Coachella Valley." In all three designs, the words Palm Springs or
PSP are the primary elements and the International Airport signifier is insignificant. The Palm
Springs focus works well for marketing & promotion, but may not be the best solution for a
logo.
3. None of the proposed designs take the architecturally significant Wexler-designed building
into account. Travelers using the airport often mention that as the most memorable part of the
airport. Statistics prove that our midcentury architectural heritage is a major draw for tourism
dollars, and what sets us apart from other southwestern cities.
4. The monument signs outside the airport should be treated as part of the architecture, not as a
place to slap a branded logo like it's a strip mall.
5. Certainly, design can be subjective. But the typography is generic, the S in designs #2 and
#3 are awkward at best and totally indecipherable, and the color palettes are garish.
6. Why was a San Diego public relations and marketing firm hired for this project, instead of
one of the many experienced, accomplished brand designers in the Valley? Their lack of
understanding of our region, beyond the basic “palm trees and bright colors”, is obvious.
None of these proposals rises to the level that we, in the design community, expect of a world-
class city. It’s time that the City treat graphic design, signage, public art, and other elements of
the visual landscape, with the same seriousness they are beginning to do with architecture.
Good environmental design contributes to making Palm Springs special, which can be easily
lost if we continue to accept mediocrity.
Thank you for your consideration.

Please do not approve the PSP logo options. The recommended one appears to be a new logo for a pot dispensary.
Honestly, that was my first thought. Also, the P&P just doesn’t say “world class destination”. Perhaps there is
professional, local talent that could design something more appropriate. Thanks for you time and efforts.

I am urging and requesting that the council hold off on making a decision on the new branding graphics for the Palm
Springs International Airport and allow a longer period to find other artists to come to the table with other design
options. The Airport is not only of historical importance, architectural significance it is the Welcome to Palm Springs
and sets the tone to what our city represents past, present and future. PSP is the gateway to the city. I believe the
graphic branding design needs to be thought out on a deeper level and convey the cities deep history, importance
of architecture, lifestyle and international attention. The design should be raised to a higher standard that will be
timeless and make visitors new and returning to be lead with their first impression and be evoked by what they see.
Palm Springs deserves better, this design is incredible important. Thank you for your time and consideration. Niko

Dear Brent,
We would like to give our opinion about the new logo/branding being considered for the Palm
Springs Airport. We would ask that the council NOT APPROVE this design, or any of the
proposed, as none of the offerings are up to the standards of graphic design and architecture in
Palm Springs.
Palm Springs is known for its design: architectural, fashion, food and fun. The airport building
is an architectural icon that greets visitors to Palm Springs with a taste of what's to come on
their visit. The logo should be in keeping with this high standard. When the right logo is
offered up - everyone will agree that it best represents "PSP."
We have several branding experts in our midst, right here in Palm Springs. Gary Wexler, son
of Don Wexler (who designed the airport) , a talented graphic designer in his own right (he
created the Lulu restaurant logo and murals that make that restaurant a #1 tourist destination)
should be given a chance to submit a design. So should Tom Dolle, creative director of
Destination PSP. The products he designs are sold in museum shops and fine stores around
the world. These are not the only two, but the first names that come to mind.
Thank-you for considering our opinion, and please let us know if this is the correct way to
submit it so it will be read at the next meeting.

Public Comment, PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item 1O, September 1, 2022. I
am writing to express my concern about the proposed new logo for PSP. I working in strategy and innovation at Best
Buy where my supervisor used to run silicon chip production for IBM. An important lesson he taught me is that you
have to execute with 100% accuracy on every step of a process, because failing to do so, causes accelerating errors
down the production line. I have two issues with logo design I saw and the creative brief. One, the brief describes
the odd S as the 'trunk' of the palm tree leaves above it. I would argue that if you polled 100 travelers to PSP about
what the S communicates to them, I would guess zero would call it the trunk. And second, the most accurate term is
Stem not Trunk for a Palm Tree, something this firm should have researched. Thank you

We live at 3000 Goldenrod Lane and we don’t approve any of the new airport logo submissions. This whole process
should be holistically..Not just the airport but EVERY signage of Palm Springs. Palm Springs is a global destination
and it should be treated as such. Think big. We need a brand I.D. bible that everyone that uses Palm Springs in their
materials has to adhere to. Hire a global firm like Landor or someone like that. Someone that has done iconic logos:
IBM, FedEx, etc. Thanks Efren Gonzalez

I saw designs for the new airport signage and logos, and wanted to submit comments, because I do not feel like
these designs are appropriate for our city. All three designs are amateurish and the colors chosen are not reflective
of Palm Springs. The first design with the italic lettering looks outdated and uninspired. It is not modern, clean, or
elegant--quite the opposite. The second design with the crooked S just looks weird. What is the point of the crooked
letter? Also, I don't think it's right to just use the airport code without the city name appearing anywhere. Plus, the
colors chosen are all wrong for Palm Springs. The third design is the least 'bad' option, but it's still not great. The
rounded letters of the airport code are again not reflective of the city, and the palm fronds look like flower petals. I
do hope there is time and budget to reconsider these designs so we have a more appropriate representation of our
city and our fabulous airport. Thank you.

NOT APPROVE this program Public Comment, PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda
Item 1O, September 1, 2022 Dear City Council, My name is W P Harris. I have recently become aware of a
rebranding campaign being proposed for the Palm Springs Airport. I spent my career in branding for large
international corporations such as Philips, Roche, Siemens, Neutrogena, Zeiss Optical, to name a few. I have lived in
Palm Springs now for three years. My love affair with this place is still going strong. When I look out my window I see
palm trees, blue sparkling water, green fairways and SEX. Palm Springs is a sexy place. Palm Springs is mid-century
glamour. It’s sophistication. It’s imagination. I don’t see this in any of these logos. These logos look cartoonish not
sophisticated. These logos are ordinary. Moving forward with any of these logos would be a disservice to the image
of Palm Springs. Thank you, W Paul Harris

Dear Mayor and City Council, Regarding PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item 1O,
September 1, 2022 I am writing to ask you to table this item for further discussion. As a design professional with
more than 30 years experience in studying branding, writing brand manuals and promoting brands, the solution
presented does not begin to meet the thought, quality and criteria necessary for such an important project. The
primary imagery reads as "PP," not "PSP." Additionally, the shape resting atop the letters could possibly be mistaken
for a partial pot leaf. Because of the possible misrepresentation, illegibility and overall inappropriateness of the
solution, I implore you to not rush this and to give this project the attention it deserves. Minimally, the design
solution needs to be explored in more detail and applied to a broader array of applications, including more signage.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Thank you,
City of Palm Springs

Esteemed council, please reconsider the consent calendar item relative to branding the Palm Springs Airport. The
concepts submitted are woefully missing any level of sophistication and are instead based in "pop" culture. The
colors and fonts are 2022 trendy, whimsical in style, and will not stand the test of time. We are a sophisticated town
that is too often, today, being portrayed in a cartoonish fashion. Anyone of these and I understand staff
recommends #3 will be dated looking in just a few years. Please redirect the designers to give it another round with
focus on color and font. This is a good opportunity to offer a design competition and let the general public weigh in
on the final choice.

All the designs are uneventful. A big Yawn. They won’t brand a thing, no one will remember, and it could just as well
be the airport in Omaha.

Dear Mayor and City Council.
There is much chatter on social media regarding the proposed new branding logo for our airport. I concur with the
dozens of comments I’ve read and hereby:
I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO VOTE AGAINST ALL THESE PROPOSED LOGOS.
From an aviation geek like myself, none of the proposed logos indicates “world class international airport”. The basic
fonts, elementary colors and illegible design work is far from what should represent us.
The airport facade is a Class 1 Historical building from a local architect, Donald Wexler. The proposed logos do not tie
into the design of the facade, nor does it tie into the Gensler addition. The company issuing these garish ideas are not
local….they are from San Diego with clearly NO idea of the richness of Palm Springs. Mountains, palm trees and colors:
groundbreaking. The third (favored) design has an illegible “S” that is trying to be clever. It looks more like an
ampersand giving the logo a “P & P” look which, in some circles, stand for “Party and Play” (let’s do drugs and have sex).
Is THAT the statement you want to greet tourists.
If this was an airport for a small town in the midwest, I can see how the proposals would be cute. For a world‐class
International destination, they are basic, unimaginative and child‐like.
We can do MUCH better. You can do MUCH better.
Again, I urge not approving these.

Public Comment, PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item 1O, September 1, 2022: I
urge you to NOT APPROVE any of the proposed graphic design proposals for the airport. None of them shows a level
of sophistication and design intelligence equal to the subject. None of them offers a complete, integrated solution
that includes directional and informational signage. It seems that they are confusing a logo for local advertising and
marketing with the much more demanding and comprehensive project of graphic identity for what is an
international destination. A high-profile, high-impact project of this nature demands a thorough and transparent
process involving the local architectural and design community. Not a quickie logo turnaround from some airport
trade shop in San Diego.

To Whom it may concern,
The logo's submitted for the airport are weak, and substandard. They're collectively lacking
the aesthetic integrity of our past, present, and future. I would love to overlook this but it is
impossible. I've noticed a great deal of public disappointment, and I must speak out.
It will not take much to identify those worthy of being heard. We must raise the bar, and
consider the input of a collective, elevated, and design savvy public.
This will simply not do. Shortsighted, and not ready for prime time. Stop, and please listen to
those reaching out. There is a wealth of brilliant, mindful professionals whom are in a better
position to assess this. The collective outcry cannot be ignored.
What has been submitted by the one firm is an embarrassment, devaluing what we are, and
what we have to offer. Consider firming a committee, and greater public input. It's like
someone is learning as they're going along getting on the job vocational training.
Stop this at once, and step up.

I’ve just seen the proposed new logo for the airport and it looks like just another cannabis shop or something that
might appear on a tacky tourist souvenir. The airport is a iconic architectural structure in the middle of a community
that embraces and celebrates architecture. Any branding of the airport should incorporate this important element
and hopefully do better than these ubiquitous colors. There are may talented designers right here in Palm Springs -
Gary Wexler for one. I strongly encourage the council to open up the process and start over. Thank you for your
consideration.

Dear City Council, I am a graphic designer. I hold a design degree from RISD. I had a graphic design/ad agency in New
York City for ten years; left to lay out Woman’s Day and Harper’s Bazaar magazines; worked in advertising agencies
up and down Madison Avenue for thirty years. Most recently I policed the brand for Bank of America, making sure
all their communications made sense for their vision. Your new proposed logos do not. The worst of it is that none
are elegant. Contextually appropriate.You have a world-class airport there, it should be treated with respect. PSP
deserves better. Please do not approve any of these logos. Yours, June Robinson

I’m asking that you do not approve the current, garish design being submitted tonight for approval. It doesn’t do
justice to our architecturally significant airport. And isn’t going to age well
We have scores of talented graphic designers in Palm Springs who understand our brand and esthetics. Why did this
have to be awarded to an out of town firm?

The proposed branding for the airport look horrible! Not worthy of our rich history. Please go back to the drawing

Regarding the new designs for logo and marketing for the Palm Springs airport, I find that all of the designs
submitted that I have seen on Facebook do not represent the unique community and history of Palm Springs
California. Let’s take it up a notch and hire a more professional marketing firm to come up with much better
options.

Palm Springs International Airport Branding Update: Just like with the choice of the Marylin placement, our city
council has decided to move forward with something with no public input - at least not until three horrible options
were laid before us. It gauls me that the people I put my trust in don’t return that trust to the community they
serve. The colors are horrific - Florida at best. And choosing PSP instead of our iconic brand “Palm Springs” is a
ridiculous blunder. And then the angled S - I don’t even know what to say about that. Lastly the font should reflect
this city’s biggest brand - mid century modern. Yet another shortsighted mistake by the few choosing for the
population. This needs an open public forum and other branding companies offered to submit.

New logo design for PSP.... WHY DID YOU USE A SAN DIEGO FIRM??? We are blessed with so much talent right here
in Palm Springs. Did you even try to use a local firm? The palm trees look like marijuana in some cases. While logos
are always subjective, I am most upset that the firm is not local. What did this cost??? Eileen Stern

RE: New branding of airport The designs you're considering leave a lot to be desired. One has a palm tree that
belongs on a tropical island, not in CV; one only has airport code with no identification of "Palm Springs," not to
mention colors that are too garish (pink and purple? Really?); and the third, which I read is favored by airport staff,
has a ridiculous "S" in the logo, but the best colors...maybe they should be used in the "plane to palm" design and
add the words "Palm Springs." That would be my suggestion. Please, though, no pink and purple!

If I had to chose I like the last one best. For the airport the bright colors are not appropriate. It works for the dap, it
just looks wrong for the airport. Too fluffy. Needs a little more sophistication. That’s my opinion being in graphic
design for almost 40 years.

Public Comment, PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item 1O, September 1, 2022
Regarding the proposed new logo for the Palm Springs International Airport, I request that you NOT APPROVE this
program or any of the proposed logos. The airport's architecture and history are too significant have a generic logo
designed by an out-of-the-area PR & marketing firm slapped on it, especially when there are incredibly talented
individuals and businesses in the area who have vast amounts of knowledge about the city, it's history and its
architecture and would do a much better job of creating either a marketing campaign or a new logo (if that's what's
desired) than anything in the proposed options. Regards, Lou Zucaro 2393 S Brentwood Dr, Palm Springs

I agree with Tom Dolle’s letter to the council and do not approve of the new proposed logo for the Palm Springs

not reflect the colors of the desert valley in my opinion.

Public Comment, Palm Springs International Airport Brand Update, Agenda Item 10, September 1, 2022 Please do
NOT accept the proposed graphic design for our airport branding. - It is not well designed. Ugly and garish. - Does
not complement the beautiful architecture of the airport. - Looks more like a logo for a marijuana store than an
airport brand! - The city needs time to gather more input from residents and our design community.

Re: PS international airport brandingupdate
Agenda item #10 September 1/2022
The proposed logo is an insult to our community in my humble opinion for 2 reasons:
- in a city that likely has a ratio of designers per capita higher than anywhere else, contracting an out-of-town
company is outrageous
- especially when the result is simply … unattractive and in no way has any connection to our city . The pseudo
marijuana leaf does not help !!!
PLEASE get the residents’ input: it will pay off, guaranteed !

I am writing to express my preference that the Palm Springs City Council SHOULD NOT APPROVE
item ‘O’ on the consent agenda regarding the Palm Springs International Airport Brand Update.
I have reviewed the 3 proposed designs presented by the consultant, and I am underwhelmed by all
three designs. Nothing about them is inspiring. Nothing about them evokes any sense of connection
to Palm Springs or the local communities. They look more like logos for a water park than branding
for a desert resort destination.
The money spent on these consultants for this product was wasted, in my opinion. The City Council
should REJECT all three designs, and should either: a) direct the consultant to go back to the start
and come up with new designs which truly reflect our airport as the entrance to a desert oasis, or b)
terminate the consultant and put this out to bid with local talent who can create a branding logo and
marketing campaign which would be more reflective of the desert oasis communities serviced by the
Palm Springs International Airport.
Sincerely,
Alan Drucker, MD

None of these are very impressive - they’re all very basic. There’s no indication of the vast MCM culture that exists
in PS. The crooked “S” in the favored design is sloppy. Was there a contest to make the design? If not, I’m sure you
could’ve gotten some high-quality designs from people for a lot less than you paid for the development of those
choices. Very disappointing.

I strongly believe that the airport, and the citizens of and travelers to PS, deserve a better new logo and graphics
than the garish Option 3 proposal that I saw today. We are a city of great architecture not some carney town.
Option 1 at least kept the graceful script that represented a city with a history of design integrity. I want to look to a
modern future for the face of PS that doesn’t forget the past.

Palm Springs is a world-class destination that should be supported by world-class
branding.
The modern, sophisticated appeal of Palm Springs and our airport is unfortunately not
reflected
in the juvenile rendition of an airport logo on the agenda at this week’s City Council
meeting.
I urge the council NOT to approve this outdated logo. The color, font and overall design
do not represent our city and airport, especially not in 2022.
There are a plethora of talented graphic designers working in the desert. The out-of-
town marketing firm’s presentation is a reminder of graphic design from the 1980’s.
Graphic designer Gary Wexler should be considered to create the logo for the airport
his father, architect Donald Wexler, designed.
Please reject the proposed logo on the agenda today. Let’s go back to the drawing
board and create a logo worthy of our city and our
iconic airport architecture.
Best Regards,
Trina Turk

Dear City Council Members and City Staff,
The Palm Springs International Airport is a Class I Historic site which seems to have
evaded the notice of the Airport and the City Manager. Any rebranding of the Airport
should include consultation with the broader community outside the Chamber and
Tourism entities.
Designed by modernist architect Donald Wexler, the Airport is one of Palm Springs
most exceptional structures and any additions to it should uphold his high standard of
design integrity. Unfortunately, none of the proposed designs come close to that.
Aviatrix notes, “When taken as a whole, the new Palm Springs International Airport
brand nods to the region’s iconic past while propelling the airport effortlessly into the
future.” Their “nod” is based on a superficial understanding of our “iconic past.” The
garish colors, cliché symbols, and strange fonts do not relate to the modern design of
the building.
It seems strange that Council is being asked to choose and vote for one of these
brand designs without consulting members of the community who have a deep
understanding of the City’s architectural history and the value of upholding its superior
design legacy.
I urge Council to table this agenda item and require the Airport to seek other
submittals from designers who truly understand what is involved.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Sidney Williams

Please do not approve the option 3 airport signage. I agree with Tom Dolle's submitted comments. And I believe
that Palm Springs should delay a decision on the airport signage until it examines the City's branding and signage
strategy - there are many inconsistent logos and signage in the City. As a result our branding is incoherent and weak.

Subject: Consent Calendar Item 1.O. Palm Springs International Airport Brand Update
Dear Mayor Middleton,
The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation would like to express our serious concerns about the
subject consent calendar item, scheduled for discussion at your September 1, 2022 council
meeting.
The proposed new airport logo is appropriate for a Palm Springs medical marijuana facility. It
is studiously inoffensive, colorfully kitschy, and has a bud of green sprouting from its top.
It is entirely inappropriate for a locally loved historic building which serves as the gateway to
the city. The logo is completely untethered from the historical context of the building and the
sophisticated midcentury typography originally associated with the airport. While the staff
report asserts that, “comprehensive research was…performed by the [logo and brand]
consultant about area architecture, history, and design,” the results seem amateurish and
“phoned in.” There also seems to be a misunderstanding on the part of city staff with regard to
the subtle distinctions between “branding” (a longer-term effort) and “marketing” (a shorter-
term effort reactive to changing economic conditions).
We also understand that the city’s Historic Site Preservation Board was not consulted on this
matter. Pursuant to city council Resolution #22480, the airport’s front façade was designated a
Class 1 Historic Site (HSPB case #70) in May of 2009. Since the airport has already been
identified as important, we hope you agree that its branding should have the appropriate
gravitas.

I saw on Facebook today that the City Council will be voting this week to implement a new logo for PSP Airport. I
would just like to voice my opinion by saying I would like to see a logo that looks Mid Century Modern in appearance
to highlight what Palm Springs is known for.

RE: September 1, 2022 Agenda, Consent Calendar Item O. Palm Springs International
Airport Brand Update
Dear Members of City Council:
As the City Council reviews the submittals for the International Airport Brand Update, please
give careful consideration to the following factors:
The Airport is an icon of the City of Palm Springs. Its distinctive form captures the optimistic,
open spirit of the City that encompasses the Midcentury period down to the present day. With
a view of Mt. San Jacinto and an interior lit by the warm desert sun, the visitor immediately
knows they have arrived in Palm Springs. Additionally, architect Donald Wexler planned the
airport so that it could expand as the population of the City and it’s numbers of visitors
expanded. It is precisely for these reasons that the west side of the airport received a Class 1
Historic Site designation. I strongly recommend the designers proposing the new signage for
the International Airport look to the iconic form of the building and honor that rather than
deny it.
Thank you for your kind consideration of these comments.

I feel strongly about the design that will be voted on Thursday Sept 1.
For brevity sake I’ll limit my comments to these:
* The graphic logo is too unsophisticated to represent an International Airport.
* Using 5 colors limits its versatility, economy and readability at small sizes.
For your consideration I’m attaching what I think offers a better solution to the brief.

PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BRAND UPDATE, Agenda Item 10, September 1, 2022 Hello City Council,
(please forgive the grammar as I am dictating this into my phone while driving) An absolute No! On the new logo
and branding for our airport! I’m just finding out about this logo and re-branding this morning while I’m driving and I
am quite frankly appalled! I have to admit I do not know all the details of how this rebranding/logo came about and
why it would be going to any design group outside of the city is quite shocking! We have per capita one of the best
cities for designers and architects. I myself have been in the logos/graphic design/re-branding industry for over 30
years mostly dealing with large nat’l sport complexes and Arenas. Also the Denver international airport and frontier
airlines Since we first put A new logo and an animal graphic on the tail of their planes. Please do not move forward
with this frozen yogurt stand logo. Thank you, Mitch

Please do NOT approve ANY of the three pending designs for the new airport logo. They are all AWFUL! This process
was NOT transparent and with so much great design talent here in town that could do a much better job it is
unfathomable as to why you would go outside of Palm Springs for this most important assignment. It is CRITICAL this
be done correctly as this will be the FIRST thing many visitors see and will represent our city for YEARS--if not
decades--to come. So please table this decision and solicit additional design submissions in an OPEN and
TRANSPARENT manner. Thank you!

I would like this considered by Council members at the meeting this week.
~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Mayor Middleton:
I have reviewed the three options suggested for a new airport logo. In today's
paper, I saw the current logo, printed in black and white. With years of experience
in brand and corporate design, I assure you I support an update to what we currently
have [or don't have].
I suggest this decision be delayed and that you respectfully ask the designer to
revisit the options provided.
In many ways, the current logo is preferable to the suggestions I've seen, albeit with
appropriate Palm Springs colors.
My specific comments: Window seat sounds good in description but shows nothing
exciting about Palm Springs or the Valley. The focal point, Palm Springs in script,
is dated; the current font is more iconic to the area.
PSP as the focal point in the second option is just wrong. And the palm tree looks
like a marijuana plant. Colors are monochromatic and uninviting.
The last option is too 'cute' and will beg the question 'what is that thing on the left'.
We can do better than this.
Thank you for your consideration.
Public Comment, Palm Springs International Airport Brand Update, Agenda Item 10, September 1, 2022: My 30-year
career as a creative executive for a large New York advertising agency, followed by 20 years as a freelance graphic
designer qualifies me—I believe—to say that anyone who finds any merit at all with any of the three submitted
designs for the Palm Springs Airport rebranding is not qualified to make that judgement. It is appalling how bland,
how lifeless, how invisible this work is and there is no salvaging it. I beg you not to settle for this mess. There are
many talented design professionals in Palm Springs. Find some to help you. Get something better. The San Diego
—— Please do not approve the design with the random pineapple top and generic PSP lettering- it looks like
something out of Miami rather than Palm Springs. We have a stunning mid century modern architectural airport
that should be referenced and referred back to in any branding style for this area. To me the design feels more
“Margaritaville” rather than a classier “Riviera” vibe which better represents our valley.
To members of the City Council,
I write to express my objection to the new logo and branding being proposed for Palm Springs
International Airport.
Our airport, designed in 1966 by architect Donald Wexler, is one of our city's greatest mid-
century modern structures. It is also the first glimpse of Palm Springs's treasure trove of mid-
century modern architecture for the multitudes of visitors who fly here from around the world.
As such it deserves branding and signage in keeping with its innovation, character, and
sophistication. The word mark "Palm Springs" in Option 1 of the 3 being considered is too
basic and dated and certainly does not represent the progressive, forward-thinking city that we
love. The proposed logo in Option 2 is garish and amateur-ish. The palm tree on the left
resembles a cannabis leaf and the slanted "S" looks like a snake, which surely many visitors
would prefer to avoid, and makes it difficult to read PSP clearly. Option 3, the weakest of
them all, is undoubtedly meant to be "fun" but again it is hard to read PSP clearly, instead
reading as PDP, and once more the palm tree looks like a cannabis leaf. In all 3 options the
color choices seem arbitrary and have no relationship to the airport's architecture or to the
colors of our city, which is strongly identified by the green of palm trees, cactus, and other
vegetation, and the blue of our big open sky.
I understand that these 3 logos were designed by an out-of-town firm and clearly their
understanding of Palm Springs and its attributes is superficial at best.
I strongly recommend that City Council delay its decision on a new logo and instead approach
Gary Wexler, a renowned Palm Springsgraphic designer AND the son of the airport's architect
Donald Wexler, to develop new, and more appropriate options for a new logo for the airport.
Palm Springs has positioned itself, thanks to many who have served on City Council in recent
years, as a progressive city that looks to the future while celebrating its legendary modern
past. A new logo for the airport, the first place visitors to our city experience, should do the
same.
Dear City Council,
I am writing regarding the Palm Springs International Airport Brand Update, Agenda Item 10,
September 1, 2022. Please include this in the public comments section.
As a Palm Springs resident from 1982-2007 and again from 2019-present, I am sorry to see that
the level of understanding of architectural significance and design excellence remains low. The
proposed new brand for the airport does not recognize the significance of the Wexler-designed
building, nor does this new branding reflect the uniqueness of this airport. In addition, the
three options presented do not rise to the higher level of design that the creative Palm Springs
community has come to expect of itself.
We are a community of passionate preservationists and sophisticated design aficionados and
professionals. Our brand demands better. Please don’t accept one of these uninspired logos
for the airport.
Mayor Middleton, Mayor Pro Tem Garner, Councilmembers Holstege, Kors, Woods,
The proposed three options for branding the Palm Springs International Airport
do not rise to the high level of design excellence that this iconic property
deserves and should be rejected.
The staff report states that these logo and signage designs are key elements of the
long-term branding of the airport. That is why it is the considered opinion of the Palm
Springs Modern Committee board of directors that such an important process deserves
much more public input and guidance from the local design & architectural community
who have a much better understanding of the iconic history and important qualities that
make the Coachella Valley an utterly unique worldwide destination.
Equally important, the Donald Wexler-designed main building is both a Class 1 Historic
Site and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Because of this, new
branding signage should be much more carefully considered.
Therefore, the Palm Springs Modern Committee board urges you to reject the
proposed designs and recommends that the Department of Aviation expand the
branding process to include additional input from the local design and
architectural community.
Thank you.
Dear Mayor Middleton and Council members,
I am writing to urge your rejection of any of the proposed new logos for the Palm Springs
International Airport presented in the staff report, item 1O for this Thursday’s council
meeting. There are many concerns relating to this item, not the least of which is that this
project began as an awareness campaign, not a rebranding. The firm that created these ’top
three’ are not from the valley, and it shows in their work.
Please listen to the community of architecture and design folks who have worked for years on
nurturing the identity and the brand of Palm Springs. Tom Dolle, Gary Wexler, David Dixon,
and many others can more eloquently explain what is so wrong with the designs proposed, but
I want to make sure you’re aware that many of us are strenuously opposed to this.
Furthermore, it’s my opinion that it's a shame that the misguided airport branding project is
being done as a stand-alone. The City does not have a logo... you use the Seal of the City as a
logo, and it is NOT one. (It contains a GRADIENT!) The Police Department does't have/use
an official city logo either, instead relying on the shield-shaped embroidered patch that adorns
their uniforms next to a photo of their badge. The list goes on. A comprehensive branding for
the entire city and all of its departments makes sense and is long overdue and it should be done
by a local designer.
Dear City Council ‐
I'm sure that the city (and WE, the city residents) has paid a healthy fee to Aviatrix Communications.
In exchange there are three possible logo options.
It seems that the city officials have fallen for a line of hooey ‐ "propelling the airport effortlessly into the future" ‐
WHAT?
Two of the three totally obscure "PSP." Don't we want something that is immediately recognizable?
The third option, where the city's name is spelled out in a cursive font, is very trite, but if we have to use one of
the three designs submitted (and really ‐ must we?) this would get my vote.
This is a very disappointing state of affairs.
This effort disappoints me because these concepts fail at almost every level. My specific concerns: the typefaces in
all three designs are generic and are not responsive to the design brief instructions to establish "a vibrant, unique
airport brand;" the City awarded the design contract to a firm not located within the Coachella Valley, resulting in
artwork that does reflect the very things that attract people to this magical place; and finally, none of the concepts
presented give me a sense that the artist was inspired by a personal connection to this place - and isn't the point of
creating artwork to use in marketing, branding, signage, and publicity to evoke a personal connection that reflects
the magic of this area? Art is subjective, to be sure, and must be interpreted individually, but this is not art for the
purpose of artistic expression and must be viewed in light of how it will represent the charm, quirkiness, and allure
of Palm Springs. On that measure, it fails, wholly,.
Thank you,
PUBLIC COMMENT- NEW BRANDING FOR THE PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Dear City Council- We urge
yuu to NOT APPROVE the current logo in your session on Sept 1. Please instead go back to the drawing board with a
new designer that understands the significance of why so many have flocked to Palm Springs and why our airport is
so special!!! The logos submitted hardly display the level of sophistication and architectural heritage that has made
our city and it’s airport so popular with the rest of the world!!! Why not instead turn to an individual like Gary
Wexler - whose father Donal Wexler designed the airport. Gary is a local and an excellent designer. In addition- we
have other local designers who are truly excellent at their craft ,like Tom Dolle. Please we urge you not to brand our
airport so swiftly with the wrong logo- it would be a travesty!!! Thank you for your consideration. Kim & Joe
Zakowski
Just say NO to the logo and branding for our beautiful Palm Springs airport. Let the people of Palm Springs know
that you can at least do one thing right.
