Palm Springs City Clerk, This is just a brief message, endorsing the "Security Video Camera System and Vandalism Repair Grant Program", which will be up for review at the Palm Springs City Council Meeting on Thursday, July 14, at 5:30 PM. Compass Rose Financial Planning & Investment Management is in full support of this proposed program to assist small businesses in the downtown district to effectively cut the cost of vandalism they might experience. Please include our endorsement among other Palm Springs small businesses in support of the proposed program, and forward to the Palm Springs City Council's attention. Dear Palm Springs City Council Members: My spouse and I were saddened and distressed by the recent incidents of acid-etched graffiti on the windows of storefronts in our beautiful, vibrant downtown. It's really awful. The store owners work so hard to bring charm and vital energy to our community after two years of pandemic travel slowdowns. Regardless of whether the perpetrators are stopped, this needs to stop. Moreover, I understand there is some movement towards providing the affected businesses owners with a grant to fully reimburse them to repair the damage. I sincerely encourage you all to follow through and make these grants, and to take a strong stand against this kind of vandalism. Thank you. We both appreciate your attention and your leadership in these trying times. Britton Steel Kurt A. Hello, I'd really like to see the downtown businesses get help with the vandalism/defacing. I've lived in Palm Springs for almost 20 years and would like to see the downtown keep improving. Many wonderful new businesses are struggling to survive there and I really hope they can. Also as a healthcare worker, I'm happy to see that we are going to be a sanctuary city for women needing abortions. I feel that taking that right away is only the beginning of the horrible things this SCOTUS has planned for us. I am writing in reference to the proposed funding to assist downtown businesses who have had their windows broken or damaged from vandals, E.g., acid etched graffiti. We, as small business owners, would find it a hardship to come up with funds for the cost of expensive window repairs. At any time of year, and especially during our much slower summer season. Filing an insurance claim would still require a high deductible, plus filing a claim could significantly increase insurance costs. It would be a tremendous benefit to the downtown businesses faced with this dilemma if the City of Palm Springs would approve the funding of this grant for 100% coverage up to $4,000 per window that is broken or damaged from vandals. Your consideration is greatly appreciated. I saw a post asking Palm Springs residents to support a 100% grant to fix the damaged windows in downtown Palm Springs. I am against it. Where does their entitlement stop? It is not my taxes that should go to subsidize them. Yes to using my taxes to increase law enforcement to put a stop to this. I had a business with 8 locations for 23 years. I never expected the city or anyone else to pay my bills. They have insurance. Either they can use their insurance or foot the bill. Why should the funds I contributed to the City go to only the sacred shops on Palm Canyon? Spend the funds to protect all of us, not fix something that is not your responsibility. If you'd like, loan them the money, but don't just sit down and write checks. If the City were to provide 50%, $1k, I could not provide the other 50% at this time due to the economic downturn. My deductible is $1k and I have bills to pay, e.g., SCE this month is $921. I will pay business bills first. o The result is that the unsightly windows will remain as they are. •Consider this program in the future for when there are downturns in the economy as we are experiencing now. •Extend this for broken windows during this economic downturn o There is a broken window in the downtown core that is has been boarded up for several months. Most likely this is due to the economic downturn. There have been opinions on social media that businesses have insurance and therefore the business should use their insurance. As in the example, I cannot afford to pay the deductible at this time. Using insurance causes an increase and can lead to denial of insurance. The City will continue to have these unsightly windows until the economy returns to growth. Please consider that window damage should actually be the responsibility of the property owners. Property owners pick and choose which expenses they want to cover. They should be held responsible for the building exterior including windows. Please consider a city ordinance that would hold the property owners accountable for building exterior including the windows. I sincerely appreciate District 3 Geoff Kors for recognizing the current economic environment and stepping up with this proposed program. I hope the other City Council members will see the importance of this program during this time of a slowing economy. That’s what insurance is for , every policy has a rider you can purchase for that. I would propose then paying for every homeowner who has experienced theft and vandalism then. Merchants are no different then us. We are a small town NOT A BANK!! It’s about time this council stopped taking care of themselves and look at what is happening to our town. We are a tourist town and no one wants to vacation amount drug infested homeless people. Stop waiting for the navigation center and do your jobs !! We have owned the business for over 14 years and have had multiple forms of vandalism, from broken windows to scratched/etched windows and a break in with door damage and have never asked for the cities assistance. We are asking for the city to cover to cost of the damage window 100%, our estimate is approximately $4,000.00. We have other windows that are damaged as well, but this acid wash is not repairable. We are a small business and can not afford our insurance rates to increase so we are asking for the city to help. Please help keep downtown Palm Springs looking beautiful and help small businesses.
