READY FROM: Justin Clifton, City Manager BY: Amy Blaisdell, Communications Director RECOMMENDATION: Approve the dedication and installation of a plaque to name the Palm Springs Dog Park in honor of former City Manager, David H. Ready., Ph.D., Esq. BACKGROUND: On March 25, 2021, Mayor Holstege requested that the City Council consider the dedication and re-naming of the Palm Springs Dog Park behind City Hall in honor of former City Manager Ready as a way to pay tribute for his extraordinary 20 years of service to the community of Palm Springs. Dr. Ready created the path to raise the funds for the initial construction of the Dog Park. In addition, he was instrumental in ensuring voter-approved Measure J funds were used in 2016 for a significant capital improvement renovation that transformed the location into one of the most popular and well used dog parks in the Coachella Valley. Dr. Ready was also one of the driving forces in finding funds for -and spearheading the construction of -the City's state-of-the-art animal shelter, the only no-kill shelter in the Coachella Valley. Dr. Ready, who adopted his own pup Thoreau from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, understood the intrinsic public value of ensuring Palm Springs residents have a safe, warm and friendly place to bring their four-legged friends to stretch, play and run free. In addition, he was a passionate supporter of the animal shelter and their adoption program as well as a proponent of ensuring that the City of Palm Springs become one of the most pet friendly communities in the nation, with a host of services for residents and their pets to enjoy.
