SUBJECT: APPROVE EXTENSION OF LOAN OF “POPSICLES” ARTWORK BY
JOHN CERNY, LOCATED AT 605 SUNNY DUNES, UNTIL JUNE 30, 2022

SUMMARY:
This action approves an extension of the loan with John Cerny for the public artwork
“Popsicles” (Attachment 1) located on a vacant lot at 605 Sunny Dunes. The Public Arts
Commission is requesting the installation be extended to June 30, 2022, for an additional
amount not to exceed $1,950.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve expenditure of $1,950 in Public Arts Funds to extend the term of the loan for the
“Popsicles” public art piece by John Cerny until June 30, 2022.
BACKGROUND:
The “Popsicles” public art piece was approved February 17, 2021, by the Public Arts
Commission as part of the Community Art Responds to Economic Shutdown (CARES)
program, where the Public Arts Commission approved the art piece, payment of an artist
fee of $2,500, payment of $1,000 for materials and installation, and to have “Popsicles”
on loan for display at 605 Sunny Dunes until December 31, 2021.
STAFF ANALYSIS:
At the November 17, Public Arts Commission meeting, the Public Arts Commission
requested the loan of “Popsicles” be extended to June 30, 2022, for an additional amount
not to exceed $1,950, which includes and loan fee of $1,500 and payment for the $450
City Land Use Permit Extension fee. The Public Arts Commission approved the payment
of the $450 City Land Use Permit Extension fee at its December 15, 2021 meeting.

Extension of “Popsicles” Public Art Installation
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approval of this request is for an additional six-month term for the loan of the “Popsicles”
art piece by John Cerny beginning January 1, 2022, in a total amount of $1,950. Sufficient
funding is available in the Public Arts Fund, Fund 150.
