OMICRON VARIANT
A new variant of COVID-19 was identified in South Africa in recent weeks. The
Omicron variant was designated as a mutation of concern by the WHO on
November 26, 2021. There are many unknowns with this variant and research is
underway. Some highlights of the Omicron variant:
•Potentially increased transmissibility.
•Increased risk of reinfection (previous COVID patients may be reinfected more
easily).
•Current vaccines remain effective against severe infection and death.
•Current tests can identify Omicron variant.
•Potentially less severe infections in many groups.
38 countries including the United States have updated travel restrictions in light of
the new Omicron variant.
All science is indicating a need to gather more data on Omicron before making
changes.
