HomeMy WebLinkAbout24683RESOLUTION NO. 24683 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE 2020 DECENNIAL CENSUS THROUGH THE CREATION OF A LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMPLETE COUNT COMMITTEE IN THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS. THE CITY COUNCIL FINDS AND DETERMINES AS FOLLOWS: A. The United States Census Bureau is required by Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution to conduct an accurate count of the population every ten years. B. The City of Palm Springs receives federal funding and apart of the basis for receiving these federal funds relies, in part, on census data. C. Census data also helps determine how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used in the redistricting of state legislatures, county board of supervisors and City Councils. D. The decennial census is a huge undertaking that requires cross -sector collaboration and partnership in order to achieve a complete and accurate count. E. The U.S. Census Bureau is facing several challenges with the 2020 Census, which include declining response rates, technological change, and fiscal constraints, thus support from local government is critical. F. The City of Palm Springs, in partnership with other local governments, the State, businesses, and community organizations, is committed to ensuring every resident is counted. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS RESOLVES: SECTION 1. That the findings and determinations reflected above are true and correct, and are incorporated by this reference herein as the cause and foundation for the action taken by and through this Resolution. SECTION 2. That the City of Palm Springs recognizes the importance of the 2020 Census and supports participation in helping to ensure a complete, fair, and accurate count. SECTION 3. That the City will form an ad hoc Complete Count Committee (CCC) to increase awareness and motivate residents to respond to the 2020 Census. The CCC will consist of appointed local government officials and community members tasked with developing and implementing a work plan to increase participation in the census. Resolution No. 24683 Page 2 SECTION 4. That the City Manager or his designee will be delegated the responsibility of appointing and operating the Complete Count Committee. SECTION 5. That the City of Palm Springs will opt -in to receive funding from Riverside County and accept $13,594.07 from the County in support of 2020 Census outreach activities ADOPTED THIS 4T" DAY OF DECEMBER, 2019.
