A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, DECLARING THE CITY
COUNCIL'S COMMITMENT TO THE RESTORATION OF
HISTORIC PLAZA THEATER AND DEDICATING FUTURE
USE OF THE THEATER FOR THE PALM SPRINGS
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL.
WHEREAS, the Plaza Theater, located at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive, was
originally constructed in 1936, opening on December 12, 1936; and
WHEREAS, on November 6, 1991, the Palm Springs City Council adopted
Resolution No. 17678 establishing the Plaza Theater as a Class I Historic Site; and
WHEREAS, on September 15, 2015, the sale of the Plaza Theater to the City of
Palm Springs was approved, subject to the conditions that: (1) due to the Class I Historic
Site designation it will not be demolished; and (2) the City of Palm Springs assumes
financial responsibility for its renovations; and
WHEREAS, the Palm Springs City Council now wishes to assist in the restoration
of the Plaza Theater in order to deliver back to the City of Palm Springs a historic building
of cultural and architectural significance that has fallen into disrepair and is deteriorating;
and
WHEREAS, the Palm Springs City Council acknowledges that a restored Plaza
Theater will add tremendous value to the City of Palm Springs by providing a historic and
intimate venue that will accommodate all types of cultural offerings, including live
performances, film screenings, educational offerings, lecture series, and so much more;
and
WHEREAS, on April 4, 2018, the Palm Springs City Council authorized a feasibility
and concept design study of the Plaza Theater, which estimated costs for repairs and
rehabilitation of the Plaza Theater in the range of $10 million to $12 million; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of this Resolution is to (1) commit to fundraising for the
restoration of the Plaza Theater, including the formation of a Fundraising Steering
Committee; and (2) dedicate future use of the Plaza Theater for The Palm Springs
International Film Festival.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS,
CALIFORNIA, DOES RESOLVE, DECLARE AND DETERMINE AS FOLLOWS:

The Palm Springs City Council's commitment to fundraising for the restoration of
the Plaza Theater, including the formation of a Fundraising Steering Committee in
order to facilitate fundraising efforts; and
2. The Palm Springs City Council's dedication to The Palm Springs International Film
Festival for use of the Plaza Theater, during the period of the annual Film Festival
during the first two weeks of each January, upon completion of its restoration.
