To: Palm Springs City Council Members and Staff The Sierra Club appreciates the work and leadership provided by the City Council members, Sustainability Commission and Sustainability Office and others at the City. We want to specifically support the existing home energy sustainability ordinance as well as proposed ordinance on electrification of new construction. Many California cities have moved forward with these initiatives. Item 4A also incudes suggestions from staff and the Sustainability Commission where the City could lean into more aggressive actions to address emissions. We encourage the council to fully consider these opportunities. We expect that there will be significant amounts of Federal and State money available for cities who are ready to lead on climate change mitigation and emissions reduction. One example is called the Cool Cities Challenge grant. Several Southern California cities have received grants of $1 million to lead efforts to develop transferable knowledge about how cities can address climate change and emissions. Palm Springs would be a great candidate for this grant award. Thank you for your consideration of these comments and the Sierra Club stands ready to help the city in these important efforts.
