KEY CHANGE: “COMPOSTABLE” PLASTIC
Prohibition on plastic now includes compostable plastic
May allow as an exception for some products that have no viable, fiber-based alternative
VS
PROS
•Not petroleum based
•Could be industrially composted
CONS
•Does not function differently as litter
•Unlikely to be accepted by our
organic waste processor initially
KEY CHANGE: FEES/INCENTIVES
Implementation challenges
Still may be confusing to calculate, especially where both apply
Puts burden on front line worker to determine fee and
determine applicability
Lingering COVID concerns
Lack of reusable food ware alternatives (not-customer supplied)
Some vendors already have an incentive for reusables (e.g.,
reduced price refills)
Options:
Remove requirement
Postpone implementation
Change –allow for charge and encourage an incentive
+$.25 Disposable Charge
-$.25 Reuse Credit
