Hello! My name is Sunni Battin I live in Kansas City. I am writing to please ask you to declare/proclaim August 31 Sexual Harassment Awareness Day. There is no day that I am aware of to just recognize sexual harassment. April is National Sexual Violence Awareness Month and while that is extremely important, it is also extremely important that Sexual Harassment gets its own day in a separate month from April. There are many organizations who do not have sexual harassment policies and/or do not do trainings. I am asking cities and towns across America to do this because I believe if cities and towns proclaimed this day and the importance of it, more organizations will have policies and trainings. Hope to hear from you all! Thanks so much!! Mayor and City Council, Two weeks ago, we lost a precious gem in our community. Marv Sholl, was without doubt one of the kindest, sweetwest men to ever grace our town. For me it was an honor to know him and call him my friend. I would like to ask the City Council to discuss planting a tree with a plaque which commemorate Marv's Sholl's life and 40 years as a Palm Springs resident and businessman. I would like to discuss its location downtown, and also perhaps a Star on Palm Canyon would be appropriate. Marvin Sholl, 93, of Rancho Mirage, CA, died peacefully on June 10, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 21, 1927 to Louis and Jeanette Sholl in Chicago, IL, where he met and married his first love and wife of 56 years, Carol Phyllis Halper. Carol preceded him in death, as did their beloved sons Scott and Barry Sholl. A lifelong car enthusiast, Marv turned his passion into his profession, running dealerships from a young age. He was especially proud of being one of the youngest Jewish men to manage a Pontiac franchise in Chicago in the 1950s. After moving to the Desert in 1976, Marv continued his long love affair with cars, and in 1981 opened Exotic Motor Cars in Palm Springs, where he never met a Rolls-Royce he didn't like. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy, serving during WWII, and always drove one of his signature cars in the Palm Springs parade. After their youngest son, Barry, died from complications of HIV/ AIDs, he and his late wife Carol became active volunteers with Desert AIDS Project and the AIDs Assistance Program (now DAP Health). They both received recognition for their humanitarian efforts in the fight against AIDS, including the 2002 Gloria Greene Award presented at Evening Under the Stars, and the Warner Engdahl Community Service Award presented at the 2006 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. On World AIDS Day in 2016, the Marv Sholl Red Ribbon of Hope Award was established to honor his then 30-year commitment and presented at the Everyday Heroes ceremony, which Marv certainly was. In 2007 Marv met the second love of his life, his adoring wife, Ruth Ruffner. Their late life love affair brought incredible joy to Marv as well as a whole new family that adored him. Marv always had a twinkle in his eye, was quick with a joke, and was a generous friend. When his grandchildren were young, they thought he must be the Mayor of Palm Springs, since wherever they went, he seemed to know everyone. He loved and was loved by the many friends he made in the Coachella Valley. There will be a private Memorial Service at a later date. However, to honor Marv's memory, we request donations be made to DAP HEALTH https://www.daphealth.org/friends-of-marvin-sholl / 1 Anthony Mejia From: Sent: To: Cc: Subject: Andrew Archdale < psscouser@yahoo.co.uk> Thursday, June 24, 2021 10:47 AM Christy Holstege Grace Garner; Dennis Woods; Geoff Kors; Lisa Middleton; Llubi Rios; City Clerk; CityManager Congratulations NOTICE: This message originated outside of The City of Palm Springs --DO NOT CLICK on links or open attachments unless you are sure the content is safe. To the City Council on the ceremony and Marilyn Forever event on Monday I'm glad the speakers emphasized the positive side of her return to PS and the positive side to tourism and our business owners it should bring I saw the sour puss protesters were a very very small minority of those in attendance. Sadly, a block away I saw this On the front doorway of the old coffee bean, human excrement! This is the other side of PS. I spoke to one of the street cleaners. 20 years ago only one crew once a week power washing parts of Palm Canyon 1 Now, two crews, seven days a week starting at 3am in the morning cleaning up excrement, trash and needles AND the number of streets they have to clean has increased. So after spending increasing money on more bums the problem is worse? Think about that for a moment as you think about the Well in the Desert tonight More, not fewer, bums are hanging around PS, for what? Hand outs and freebies before they move on. I see some really mentally sick people, they should be off the streets with the right help, the others they need a dose of reality, stop the freebies, help and handwringing and force them to get their act together I remember years ago a person thanked a landlord for evicting her! She realized that she had to get her act together! She got a new job, got a new home, thrived and never looked back, tough love! Walking up Palm Canyon on the east side of the street I saw a tall black homeless man shouting at the traffic, and as two women walked by he appeared to lung at them. I was on the phone at the time, he spotted me and started to walk towards me. I backtracked to Amado Rd and dialed 911 and told the operator what was happening. She appeared disinterested. As I was speaking to 911 a homeless woman started to approach me as she probably heard my conversation I immediately walked away from her as well and walked home quickly Is this what PS has come down to? Action is required council members this is unacceptable This was after I saw two people sleeping in the doorways of shops at 8 am this morning. Get rid of these bums, no other words adequately describe them I see street crews out early am 2 not 1 as there used to be no doubt clearing up theirs ness every single day! decided to walk downtown last night for the mini village fest and near Indian Ave I saw a sneaker on the pavement, lS0yards further down the street was a man sitting in the middle of the sidewalk counting his fingers with one shoe, mystery solved! Turning the corner was an old lady lying in a storefront who had obviously just peed herself A few yards further a gentleman and all his stuff lying on a newly painted bench, and then just by the old coffee bean a lady in a wheelchair legs and feet exposed with all kinds of scars and scabs happily smoking a cigarette. The mini village fest was a tribute to the brave vendors, especially in record breaking heat. I gazed across to Starbucks and the usual bums and I use that word intentionally bedding down for the night, disgraceful. They are literally intimidating the store owners and visitors alike. Have you seen how filthy some of the newly painted benches are, it's disgusting because of these bums that have no respect for PS, or you. Time to be bold, identify the folk in real need AND who want to change their lives, and help them. As far as the rest are concerned stop the handwringing and treat them as any other citizen. Why should they be able to litter and defecate with no consequences? Oh and it seems that the few stores open were the pot shops, first to open last to close! So suddenly this community is in great need of medical marijuana Rethink what this town is all about, hang your heads in shame when this pot pandemic affects a generation when you are all long gone Please, please rethink your strategy re cannabis in PS Can you really imagine a huge growing facility north of 1-10 will not have an impact on the whole area? 67 pot shops and growing? Do you not understand how this attracts criminals to operate with impunity in the city off the back of the smokescreen of II legal" shops? Dressing them us as leisure lounges is also the biggest lie, it's a gateway to hard drugs whatever the industry may say. STOP thinking about revenue, but about the consequences This is all about business and nothing to do with II medical 11 2 Opioid crisis engineered by big business, legal, cigarettes, manufactured by big business, legal, vape shops engineered by big business, legal. But what of the morality? All of these business know the downside to the health of their customers. Drug addiction, suicide, homelessness and the list goes on. Members think of your legacy this will not be a pretty picture. This morning I encountered at least 12 homeless/drifters on Palm Canyon all in some state of light headed ness! One was actually smoking a cigar! This picture says it all 3 Stop this madness and stop making excuses, make the hard decisions. After pot shops , what next? Think of what you are normalizing for the next generation and the disastrous consequences it will have. Council Members Thank you for standing firm on the placement of Marilyn who has finally arrived back in PS ........ BUT please all take a long hard look in the mirror as another pot shop is about to open on Palm Canyon! 67 pot shops in Palm Springs, added security and cost and of course please please think added problems in the future for our youth and homeless/drifters! STOP thinking about cannabis revenue, it's shameful. I saw a homeless older woman this morning sitting cross legged outside Starbucks counting her joints on the sidewalk completely out of her mind! Do you all ever walk around PS at 6.30 am onwards and see all this or are you blind? Spending money and deciding what to do with the remainder of the $10million allocated for homeless is NOT the answer The Roy Wilson center was built years ago for $millions and .............. You know the answer! The question has to be, which none of you want to ask is" Why are people CHOOSING to be drifters?" The vast majority are NOT homeless they do not want the responsibility of all that goes with staying in a home! Honestly understand this, stop pandering to them with freebies and concentrate on the core group who genuinely want help to either get off addictions, get a job and contribute to society in a positive way. 4 Have you ever noticed that many have no respect for themselves or anybody else in this community when leaving all their trash everywhere, but we continue the handwringing? They actually have no respect for you either, let that sink in. The path to becoming homeless can start with a large medical bill that causes someone to fall behind on their rent payments, which leads to eventual eviction. More than half of the people surveyed cited economic hardship as the primary reason that they fell into homelessness. As of January 2019, 27% of people experiencing homelessness in the entire United States are in California. It is fair to say Palm Springs homeless problem is the work of incompetent liberal elected officials who have neglected their duties in mitigating the homeless problems in the city. Numerous studies have shown homeless or near-homeless move to politically liberal areas, making the assumption that they will receive more assistance. As corrupt city officials continue to kick the can down the road, ignoring the impact the homeless can have on local business, particular restaurants, business owners are experiencing vandalism and even arson on their properties. In fact one famous establishment doing business at the same location for over 20 years on Palm Canyon Drive was almost bum down a few days ago, by a fire started by homeless individual. Thanks to Fire Department the building and business was saved. 1 The Palm Springs City Elected officials can't have it both ways to welcome the tax revenue business pay, and at the same time fail to protect the very same business that fill their coffers. 2 Anthony Mejia From: Sent: To: Andrew Archdale < psscouser@yahoo.co.uk> Friday, June 18, 2021 8:45 PM Christy Holstege Cc: Grace Garner; Dennis Woods; Geoff Kors; Lisa Middleton; Llubi Rios; City Clerk; CityManager Subject: On Palm Canyon NOTICE: This message originated outside of The City of Palm Springs --DO NOT CLICK on links or open attachments unless you are sure the content is safe. Mayor Holstege, I noticed with great concern that the City has plans to hold a secret closed-door session with the Public Land Trust to discuss "Price and Terms" of the sale of Tahquitz Creek golf course. At your last town hall you assured us that NO ACTION would be taken until there was extensive outreach and community engagement. What happened to that promise? If you haven't already made up your mind to sell, why are you negotiating "Price and Terms". There has been ZERO outreach or community engagement. If you did try to engage you would find that the residents around the golf course and the golfers that use the course are adamantly opposed to any plan to sell the course. The Tahquitz Creek golf course is an important and integral part of our city and its history. The Legends Course dates back to 1957, making it an historic mid-century landscape, every bit as important to the fabric of our City as our mid- century architecture. It is our ONLY municipal golf course and provides affordable active recreation opportunities to thousands of residents and visitors every year. Please don't listen to the lies and fear mongering coming from Oswit Trust. No one is going to build housing there; Golf is NOT a dying sport and the City does not lose a million dollars a year. The City spends close to a million dollars a year to pay off the bond used to build the Resort Course but it's almost paid off and most of the payments now go to principal, not interest. That is not a loss, it's an investment that will soon be paid off in full. The City spends a million dollars a year on the aquatics center, should we destroy that too? Selling the property for anything close to 5 million would be a crime. The City paid a 5 million dollar bribe for the small patch of land that will become our downtown park. How can you sell l00s of acres of prime land for such a paltry sum, especially after the citizens invested far more than that to buy and build the 2 courses? The clubhouse alone is worth $5 million! If you even want to consider selling it you should first do a replacement cost analysis to determine its true value to the taxpayers. Oswit Trust did a great job saving Oswit Canyon from development. I supported that effort and I support their efforts to protect more of our open space. I might even support their effort to protect the Bel Air and Mesquite courses that could realistically be threatened with development, but I do not support their attempt to destroy the Tahquitz Creek Golf Course. The only real threat to Tahquitz Creek Golf is Oswit Land Trust! Please stop this madness NOW and drop any consideration of this ill-fated plan to destroy our beautiful golf course. At the very least, keep your promise to meet with the neighbors before taking ANY ACTION including holding back door closed session meetings. Thank you, Colin Sarjeant 1 Linda Holmes 501 N. Phillips Rd. Palm Springs, CA 92262 Linholmes@aol.com Offices of the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager City of Palm Springs 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92262 Dear Mayor, City Council, and City Manager: Subject: DRP9sition to Vacation Rentals in Residential Zones As you are aware, long-time residents of Palm Springs are experiencing great difficulties in their neighborhoods due to all the vacation rentals that have popped up in the past few years. On my cul-de-sac, there are seven homes. When we moved here in 1999, they were all owner occupied, and together we have created great friendships, socializing and taking care of each other. Today, there are only two full-time residents (including me), one half-time resident who has a second home elsewhere, three vacation rental houses, and one home for sale (which we're afraid could go to another absentee owner who will use it for vacation rentals). The rental houses are not illegal nuisances, they are well managed, so that isn't the problem. However, this is no longer a "neighborhood" of friends who know and care for each other, and that is very sad. These vacation rentals are "businesses" and should not be allowed in residential zones. Our town is no longer full of neighbors, and life just isn't the same. A suggestion is to create a new type of business zone where short-term and long-term vacation rentals can be located, just like hotels; and prohibiting vacation rentals in single-family zones. Owners in single-family residential Page 1 zones could still rent houses with long-term leases to people who cannot or choose not to buy a house but wish to live in a "neighborhood." Due to the zoning, a new home buyer would be aware of what they're getting into and could decide for themselves what kind of neighborhood they wish to live in. HOA's in the multiple-family zones could continue to establish their own rules because the owners have a say if they want vacation rentals or not, unlike us in single-family neighborhoods who have no say. I also believe Realtors should be required to tell potential home buyers how many vacation rentals are nearby, so they can decide if they want to live in a "neighborhood" or live next to these mini-hotels. I am disappointed in the City's reaction to this major problem for residents, and I am asking you to consider helping your voting citizens who live here full-time and look to you for keeping Palm Springs a wonderful place to live. Sincerely, Linda Holmes Page2
